On June 11, 2024, the Newberry County community was rocked by the tragic news of K-9 Officer Coba’s untimely death after a violent encounter. The State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) reported that Coba, a four-year-old Belgian Malinois mix, was shot while assisting in the apprehension of a suspect in Prosperity, South Carolina.
Law enforcement officials, including deputies from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, were at a residence on Gravel Road to serve an arrest warrant for a fugitive. Upon arriving at the scene, they located the suspect who had been hiding within a family member’s home. As they approached, K-9 Coba was part of the team confronting the individual. It was during this encounter that the suspect opened fire, striking Coba.
After the shooting, the law enforcement team returned fire at the suspect. Coba was rushed to an emergency veterinarian, while the suspect was taken to a nearby trauma center. Several deputies received treatment for minor injuries from the incident.
Coba had been with SLED since 2021 and proudly served on both the SWAT Team and the K-9 Tracking Team. Coba’s contributions to specialized training and numerous apprehensions helped ensure the safety of the community and law enforcement partners. His dedication stands as a testament to the vital role K-9 units play in public safety.
Governor Henry McMaster took to social media to express his condolences, stating, “Today, we tragically lost SLED K9 Agent Coba in the line of duty…” His tribute highlights not only the loss felt by law enforcement but the broader community as well.
A memorial service for K-9 Officer Coba is scheduled for June 19, 2024, at 10 a.m. The ceremony will take place at the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy located at 5400 Broad River Road, Columbia. This event will serve as an opportunity for the public to pay their respects and honor Coba’s service and sacrifice.
While Coba’s passing has left a significant void, the heroism exhibited by the K-9 officer will not be forgotten. SLED and local law enforcement officials are collaborating with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
At this time, there have been no updates on the condition of the suspect involved in the incident. However, the focus remains on honoring Coba’s memory and recognizing the bravery of all law enforcement officers who risk their lives daily.
As the community of Prosperity copes with the shock of Coba’s death, many are reflecting on the essential role that K-9 officers play in law enforcement. The dedicated efforts of these skilled animals provide invaluable support in various operations, from tracking down fugitives to ensuring public safety.
Local residents are encouraged to attend the memorial service to show their support for Coba’s handlers and those affected by this tragic incident. It stands as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who wear the badge and serve to protect the community.
While the investigation continues, the love and respect for K-9 Officer Coba will resonate within the hearts of many. His commitment to service will always be a part of the fabric of the Newberry County community.
