Lane Closures on I-26 in Greenville Set to Begin April 15 for Bridge Rehabilitation

Lane Closures Coming Up on I-26 in Greenville, S.C.

Hey there, Greenville! If you’re planning on hitting the road soon, there’s some important news you should know about. The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has announced some temporary lane closures that could affect your travel plans on I-26. So, here’s the scoop!

What to Expect

Starting on April 15 and lasting for about a month, traffic will be reduced to one lane in the eastbound direction between Laurens and Newberry Counties. Specifically, the lane closures will occur at mile marker 65 in Laurens County and mile marker 83 in Newberry County. SCDOT officials want to extend their thanks to everyone for their patience during this time as they work to improve our highways.

Why the Closures?

You might be wondering, “Why the closures?” Well, they’re necessary for the rehabilitation of two bridges on I-26—one at Indian Creek and the other at Palmetto Trail. It’s all part of a project to make our infrastructure stronger and more efficient for years to come.

A Word from the SCDOT

Justin P. Powell, the Chief Operating Officer at SCDOT, made it clear how important the work is. He said, “We recognize that any lane closure on our interstate system is going to cause some travel delays – that is why we have incentivized the contractor to get the work done early and we will assess heavy penalties for every day the project is behind.”

It’s nice to know that they’re doing their best to keep things on schedule! After all, who wants to sit in traffic longer than necessary?

Plan Ahead!

If you’re heading out during this construction period, it’s a great idea to plan ahead. Expect some delays and consider taking alternate routes if possible. The SCDOT has made it clear that all oversized and overweight vehicles will need to detour around the areas affected by the closures.

Looking Down the Road

This isn’t going to be a one-time deal either—a similar lane closure for the westbound direction of I-26 is anticipated in 2025. So, if you frequently travel this route, it might be worth marking your calendar for upcoming adjustments in your driving plans.

Thanks for Your Understanding

In closing, the SCDOT appreciates your understanding as they work to make our roads better. So, the next time you’re driving along I-26 and see those orange cones or signs, remember that a little inconvenience now will help ensure smoother travel in the future!

Happy traveling, everyone! Stay safe out there, and don’t forget to check your route before heading out!
