Newberry, S.C. – Limestone University Football Team Shines in Homecoming Spoiler

On Saturday, November 2, 2019, the Limestone University football team defeated Newberry College 35-14, achieving a record of 6-3 overall and 5-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. The game took place at Setzler Field, where Limestone played spoiler to Newberry’s Homecoming celebration, dropping the Wolves to 3-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

Dustin Noller Returns, Leads Saints to Victory

Starting quarterback Dustin Noller made a solid return after missing the previous week due to an ankle injury. He proved crucial to the victory, throwing for 290 yards and three touchdowns. Noller’s performance energized the Saints, contributing significantly to their strong offensive display.

First Half Highlights

Newberry was the first to score, taking the lead with about four minutes left in the first quarter. Dwayne Wright broke loose on a 16-yard run, capping a five-play, 52-yard drive. After Bryce Earley successfully kicked the extra point, the Wolves led 7-0.

However, Limestone responded shortly after. With just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter, DJ Black caught a 40-yard pass from Noller, which completed a five-play, 53-yard drive. David Deneen Jr.‘s kick tied the game at 7-7.

In the second quarter, Limestone took control of the game. With four minutes left until halftime, Tre Williams charged in for a two-yard touchdown following a nine-play, 49-yard drive. Deneen’s successful extra point put the Saints ahead 14-7.

Before halftime, Limestone struck again. Kevin Lalin scored on a three-yard rush with just 42 seconds left, expanding the Saints’ lead to 21-7 after another made extra point by Deneen. This run was part of a rapid four-play, 80-yard drive.

Second Half Surge

Limestone’s offense continued to shine in the third quarter. Less than two minutes into the half, Black caught another pass from Noller for a stunning 55-yard touchdown, with Deneen’s extra point making it 28-7. This drive covered 69 yards in just three plays.

Later in the third quarter, at 8:38 remaining, Mikey Jones secured a 36-yard touchdown pass from Noller, and Deneen’s extra point extended the Saints’ lead to 35-7 after a six-play, 55-yard drive.

Newberry’s Final Touchdown

Newberry managed to add another touchdown with just over five minutes to go in the game. Ja’Corey Martin sprinted down the field for a 42-yard run to the end zone. Earley hit the extra point, bringing the final score to 35-14.

Looking Ahead

With this victory, Limestone University looks forward to their next game, returning home to host Barton College on Saturday, November 9, with kickoff set for 12 noon. The Saints will aim to build on this momentum as they seek to elevate their conference standing.
