NEWBERRY, S.C. – Over the weekend, Limestone University’s football team put on quite the performance as they faced off against Newberry in an action-packed game on Saturday, Nov. 2. With the final score of 35-14, the Saints not only celebrated their sixth win of the season, bringing their overall record to 6-3 and conference record to 5-2, but they also played the role of the uninvited guest, spoiling Newberry’s Homecoming festivities in the process.
After a brief stint on the sidelines due to an ankle injury that kept him away during last week’s setback to Wingate, starting quarterback Dustin Noller made a triumphant return to the field. Noller showcased his abilities by throwing for an impressive 290 yards and scoring three touchdowns, helping to elevate the Saints to a convincing victory.
The game kicked off with Newberry drawing first blood. With just 4:37 left in the first quarter, Dwayne Wright made a dash on a slick 16-yard run that capped off a neat five-play, 52-yard drive. The extra point from Bryce Earley gave the Wolves a lead of 7-0 and set the stage for what fans hoped would be a spirited contest.
However, Limestone wasn’t about to back down. With just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Saints responded emphatically. DJ Black came down with a spectacular 40-yard reception from Noller, leveling the score at 7-7 thanks to the successful extra point by David Deneen, Jr. This touchdown marked the start of a relentless assault by the visitors.
As the second quarter rolled in, it was evident that Limestone’s momentum had picked up. With 4:00 left in the half, Tre Williams barreled into the end zone for a two-yard touchdown, building the Saints’ lead to 14-7 after another successful PAT from Deneen. The Saints were not finished yet! Just before halftime, Kevin Lalin rushed for a quick three-yard touchdown, expanding the lead to 21-7 after a rapid four-play, 80-yard drive.
The second half began much like the first ended—with Limestone dominating the field. Less than two minutes into the third quarter, Black struck again, catching a 55-yard touchdown pass from Noller, increasing the Saints’ scoreboard to 28-7. But wait, there was more! With just under nine minutes left in the quarter, Mikey Jones added another six to the lineup with a 36-yard touchdown reception, pushing the score to 35-7.
Newberry refused to throw in the towel completely. With 5:31 remaining in the fourth quarter, Ja’Corey Martin sprinted in on a thrilling 42-yard touchdown run, bringing the score to its final tally of 35-14 after yet another successful extra point from Earley. While it wasn’t the outcome Newberry had hoped, fans certainly got their money’s worth in excitement!
The Saints are now gearing up for their next challenge as they plan to return home to host Barton on Saturday, Nov. 9, at 12 noon. After such a commanding performance, fans will be eager to fill the stands and cheer on their team once again. Get ready for another thrilling Saturday of football!
