The Newberry Opera House was designed by G. L. Norman and built at a cost of $30,000. The building is an example of Victorian civic eclectic architecture, with a French Gothic clock tower that dominates the city’s skyline. The clock tower is 130 feet high and is topped with a garfish weathervane. The tower also houses an E. Howard Tower town clock, which is 90 feet from the ground.

The first floor of the Newberry Opera House was originally used by the town government for offices, a jail, and the fire company. The upper floor was designed as a theater and supporting spaces. The theater has a sloping parcade and a wide, sloping balcony. The stage has drop curtains and seven scenes.

The Newberry Opera House was a popular cultural center from the time of its dedication in 1882. It attracted national touring companies, individual performers, and a variety of theater acts. The theater later was adapted also for use as a movie theater, but showed its last movie in 1952.

The Newberry Opera House was restored beginning in 1998. The restoration project included an addition to enable the theater’s use for full theatrical productions. The theater reopened in 2001 and has been hosting a variety of performances ever since. The Newberry Opera House is a beautiful and historic building that is a valuable asset to the community. It is a great place to see a live performance and to learn about the history of Newberry.
