Madison witnessed an exciting day on the golf course as the Division 1 state tournament kicked off at University Ridge. The defending state champion Divine Savior Holy Angels lead the tournament after finishing the first round with a team total of 320, putting them ahead of Middleton by six strokes. DSHA displayed remarkable skill, as they aim to keep their title this year.
Following closely is Middleton, who finished strong at 326. Meanwhile, Kaukauna landed in seventh place with a score of 344 while Bay Port secured ninth with a total of 359. Notable performance came from McKenna Nelson of Beaver Dam/Wayland Academy, who dominated the leaderboard with a score of 7-under-par 65. She is ahead by three strokes over Payton Haugen from Brookfield East, who recorded an impressive 68. Together, they were the only two golfers under par on day one.
In Kaukauna, Charlie Clinefelter led with a score of 79, placing him in eleventh. Taylor LeMire from Appleton North shot an 80 and is tied for twelfth, while Madelyn Gicius from Bay Port shot an 86 and sits at tied for thirty-third place.
Transitioning to Division 2, Spooner leads the charge with a total of 362. Seymour placed fourth with a score of 400 as they aim to make an impact on the leaderboard. Addison Kofal of Saint Croix Central shot a solid 75, giving her a narrow lead in individuals, just one stroke ahead of Belle Kongshaug from Colfax/Elk Mound.
It was not just golf that had the crowd buzzing in Madison. In volleyball, Xavier achieved a balanced record of 2-2, gaining valuable wins over Oak Creek and Appleton North while facing tough losses against Arrowhead and Pewaukee. Noteworthy players included Madison Daley, who achieved 27 kills, 17 digs, and six aces.
Meanwhile, Luxemburg-Casco ended their day with a 1-3 record, their single victory coming against Oak Creek. And at the Oconto Falls tournament, the Panthers sparkled with a 4-1 record, showcasing their strength in pool play.
