Miami Cross-Country Teams Shine at Regional Championships

In Miami, the Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country team put on an impressive display at the Region 4-3A meet, claiming their 22nd consecutive regional championship. Held at South Fork High School in Stuart, the event saw a heat index reaching around 86 degrees, but the Wolverines powered through effortlessly, finishing with a perfect score of 15 points. This marks the school’s 28th regional title.

The Belen team displayed remarkable teamwork, with all five runners finishing in the top five positions out of a total of 110 runners from 16 teams. Sophomore Armando Cruz led the pack, crossing the finish line first with a time of 16:10. He was closely followed by senior Joseph Socarras (2nd, 16:10.20), senior Diego Magarino (3rd, 16:10.30), senior Justin Ruiz (4th, 16:10.40), and sophomore Marcelo Mantecon (5th, 16:10.50). Their remarkable performance guaranteed the team a spot at the FHSAA State Championships in Tallahassee, as they aim for their eight consecutive state title.

In addition to the boys’ competition, the girls’ region saw some exciting results as well. Fort Lauderdale Dillard High School secured the team title with 29 points, far ahead of their nearest competitor. Eighth grader Shynah Collins took the individual title, finishing first among 108 runners with a time of 18:53.90. Her teammate, Abigail Richards, secured third place in 19:19.40.

The competition highlighted the impressive athletic talent in the Miami area, with local schools showcasing athletic prowess and a spirit of sportsmanship. With the state championships on the horizon, interest will surely grow in the upcoming performances as these talented athletes continue their journey.
