Montpelier Launches Thrilling High School Winter Sports Season with Impressive Basketball and Hockey Performances

Winter Sports Season Kicks Off in Vermont

This week marked the start of the winter sports season for high schools across Vermont, and teams wasted no time in showcasing their skills. In basketball, Mount Mansfield beat Colchester with a score of 58-40. Maysa Long led MMU with 16 points and 6 rebounds, while Dakota Karpinski lit up the court for Colchester, scoring 20 points, including four 3-pointers in the first half.

In another close game, Blue Mountain narrowly defeated Sharon, 34-32. Meanwhile, St. Johnsbury showcased their dominance with a decisive 59-40 victory over Colchester, led by Michael Rodriguez Guerrero’s 19 points.

Transitioning to the ice, Rice took down Colchester with a score of 7-1. Vincent Lanzetta was the star player, netting a hat trick in his first high school game. In a competitive matchup, Harwood edged out Hartford, winning 5-3 thanks to Josh Dietz’s impressive two goals.

Vermont’s Nordic and Alpine skiing teams are also gearing up for a competitive season, with schedules being released soon. Coaches and representatives are encouraged to report on game results as they happen to keep the community updated.

Moreover, the girls’ hockey tournament at Leddy Arena promises to be an exciting event, featuring teams from Franklin Academy and Rice, starting at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
