Monument Academy Cross Country Team Makes History at State Championships

In Monument, Colorado, the Monument Academy cross country team has shown remarkable determination this season, culminating in a historic performance at the State Championships. This small charter school, which only has 122 enrolled students, has fought hard to gain recognition in a competitive district that includes powerhouse schools like Lewis-Palmer and Palmer Ridge.

The journey hasn’t been easy for Monument Academy. Forming sports teams with limited enrollment and resources posed a significant challenge, especially in cross country. After competing outside the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) for three years, their perseverance paid off as they became fully recognized this season, opening the doors for a range of sports.

At the recent state meet, standout runner Matthew Start claimed a third-place finish in the 2A division, marking a crucial moment for the school and showcasing their talent on a larger stage. Even though the team consisted of only eleven athletes—ten boys and one girl—the commitment and teamwork demonstrated were exceptional. Matthew’s sub-16-minute race time solidified his reputation as the fastest runner, and he is heading to run at South Dakota School of Mines next year.

On the girls’ side, Sharon Klein stands out as the lone female competitor on the team. She displays great resilience by training alongside the boys and challenges herself against them every day. Klein shared her passion for running, saying, “I love running. Every part of it, but the pain during the last 800 meters is tough.”

Coaches Tom Eller and Cathy Owen have been instrumental in the team’s success, often balancing their own competitive running careers with coaching. Their enthusiasm and dedication to their athletes have been contagious, inspiring the runners to push their limits.

The team has also attracted support from parents who provide transportation to events, a necessity since the school does not have funded buses. The efforts of the athletes, coaches, and supportive families demonstrate a community commitment that extends beyond the classroom.

As the athletic program continues to grow, Athletic Director Michael Swendsen emphasizes the importance of fundraising to build the school’s “Field of Dreams.” Principal Angela Duca added, “We always find a way beyond the challenges, and I’m so proud of our cross-country athletes this year.”

The achievements of Monument Academy’s cross-country team reflect the spirit of a small school that refuses to be overshadowed. Their hard work and dedication are paving the way for future champions as they strive for excellence.
