Local Independent Cinema Seeks Community Support to Thrive Amid Attendance Challenges

Community Love for Cinema

Local Cinema in Newberry Turns to Community for Support

NEWBERRY, S.C. — The cozy and charming MTD Arthouse Theater is calling out to its neighbors for a little help and love. This small, independent movie theater has only been open for a little over a year, but already, owner Michele Gangale finds herself in a bit of a pickle regarding its future.

Named in memory of her late husband, who had a great passion for films, Michele believes in the magic that independent cinema can bring to the community. “It’s been a wild ride,” she shared. “We’re facing some real challenges with attendance that have almost forced us to shut our doors on a few occasions.”

Bringing the Film Community to Life

Michele pointed out that many folks do not realize how robust the film community is outside of the glamour-filled Hollywood realm. “There are so many incredible films out there just waiting to be discovered,” she explained. “They just don’t get the exposure they deserve.” And she’s absolutely right! The MTD Arthouse Theater is springing to life with opportunities to showcase these hidden film gems.

Living in the Chapin, Newberry, and Laurens areas, many locals are often chatting in community groups about what entertainment options are available. Michele sees this as proof that there’s a genuine desire for meaningful film experiences, and the MTD Arthouse is eager to fill that void.

A Call to Action

The message from Michele is clear: “The help that we need is simple. Just come on in and watch a film! Enjoy the atmosphere and see what we have to offer. We want to see this theater not just survive but truly thrive.” And thrive, she hopes to do — with dreams of adding an arcade, upgrading seating, and adding fun new features to create an even more enjoyable experience for moviegoers.

Unique Offerings You Won’t Want to Miss

But what makes the MTD Arthouse stand out from big chains like AMC or Regal? For one, it provides cozy blankets for patrons, unique confectionery items, and chances to engage directly with the talent behind the films. Last month, for example, the theater screened the psychological thriller “The One That Got Away”, and attendees had the rare opportunity to meet the film’s director.

Michele also noted that local businesses have generously supported the theater with donations for the concession stand, the theatrical curtains, and even signage outside the venue. “It’s truly a community effort,” she remarked, beaming with appreciation.

A Brighter Future Awaits

As more people flock to the theater, Michele hopes to bring new films into rotation. “The more attendees we get, the more popular films we can add!” she shared enthusiastically. However, she recognizes that every screening requires funding, making community support even more crucial.

On this weekend, June 14 and 15, the MTD Arthouse will proudly present “Wholesome Grove,” an award-winning film that was selected as Best Feature at the Redwood Film Festival. It’s the perfect opportunity to gather your friends and family, support local cinema, and enjoy an enriching movie experience.
