Concern Grows in Chapin, SC Over Hunt for Murder Suspect

CHAPIN, S.C. — Residents are feeling uneasy as local authorities continue the search for 45-year-old Nicholas Hamlett, an “armed and dangerous” murder suspect from Tennessee. Last seen in Chapin, Hamlett is wanted in connection with a chilling murder that happened back in October.

A Community on Alert

The search escalated Thursday night when the news broke about Hamlett. Chapin resident Stan Bugner expressed his worries, which were common among neighbors who heard the news. “When you have somebody that’s done something wrong, especially murdering somebody, it makes you a little uncomfortable, especially at night, you know?” said Bugner.

Living just outside of town in a rural setting makes him feel particularly vulnerable. “You feel like somebody could sneak up,” he continued. That evening, he activated his security system to keep watch over his property.

The Details behind the Suspect

Hamlett is wanted in Monroe County, Tennessee, for allegedly killing a hiker on October 18. Following the incident, he reportedly stole the victim’s identity, compounding the already shocking scenario. Authorities describe him as dangerous and with a violent criminal history.

According to the U.S. Marshals Service, which is leading the investigation, there’s a chance Hamlett may have fled to Chapin due to his ties to the nearby Columbia area. “We recommend they stay vigilant out there,” warned U.S. Marshal Carlos Flores, Deputy Commander of the Carolinas Region Fugitive Task Force. His words resonate strongly with the residents who are anxious to learn more.

Stay Vigilant, Stay Safe

Marshal Flores has urged not just Chapin residents but everyone in the nearby Midlands area to be on high alert. He mentioned that Hamlett might be hiding in wooded regions or seeking refuge in abandoned houses and campers. “At this point, he does have ties in the city of Columbia. During our investigation, we developed some information that he was possibly in the Chapin area,” he explained.

Residents are encouraged to lock their doors and keep watch for anything suspicious. Officers stress the importance of caution, particularly because Hamlett is believed to be armed and has a history of violence. Using the alias “Nic Hamlett,” he has already proven to be a serious threat.

What to Do if You See Hamlett

If anyone spots Hamlett, law enforcement advises not to approach him. Instead, it’s crucial to call 9-1-1 immediately. Community members are reminded that collaboration and vigilance are key in ensuring everyone’s safety during this tense period.

A Call for Community Togetherness

As the search for Hamlett intensifies, residents of Chapin are coming together, sharing information and looking out for one another. It’s a troubling but uniting time for the community. Neighborhoods across Chapin are encouraged to communicate openly and keep each other informed.

As unsettling as the situation is, the community is taking proactive steps to protect themselves and their loved ones, showing that together, they can face challenges head-on. Let’s hope for a swift resolution and the safe return to normalcy for Chapin residents.
