Newberry Prepares for National Night Out on August 6
NEWBERRY — The excitement is building in Newberry County as residents gear up for National Night Out on Tuesday, August 6. The community is invited to gather at Mollohon Park, located at 211 Player Street, from 6-8 p.m.
A Historic Event
This annual event aims to strengthen the bonds between local neighborhoods and law enforcement agencies. It has been held nationwide for 41 years, and the City of Newberry has participated since 2011. The campaign promotes community spirit and aims to create safer, more caring neighborhoods.
Local Involvement
A variety of local agencies will participate this year. The lineup includes the Newberry Police Department, Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, Newberry County EMS, and other local organizations such as the Newberry Fire Department and the Newberry Rescue Squad Station 14. Community churches, the South Carolina State Transport Police, and local parks and recreation departments will also join in the fun.
What to Expect
“I love seeing families and kids interact with community groups,” said Sergeant Khadijah Gaskins, who is organizing the event this year. She highlighted some of the activities that will return, such as two bounce houses and a 360-degree photo booth. Attendees can also expect free pizza and popcorn, courtesy of ServPro of Newberry.
Entertainment will be provided by Dj Glee, who will keep the atmosphere lively as families enjoy the different activities offered.
Games and Prizes
One popular activity returning this year is the “buddy cards” for children. These cards will allow them to collect signatures from local agencies, which they can then use to participate in the annual ping-pong ball drop. This engaging activity usually happens towards the end of the night, followed by closing remarks from the organizers.
Bringing the Community Together
Police Chief Kevin Goodman emphasized how significant the event is for community relations. “National Night Out is another great opportunity for police to engage with the community in positive ways,” he said. The event serves as a reminder that building solid relationships between law enforcement and residents is essential for community safety.
Transportation Information
As of now, the possibility of a shuttle service for attendees is still uncertain. However, Gaskins mentioned that if a shuttle is arranged, the information will be posted on the City of Newberry’s National Night Out event page on Facebook.
