Newberry Academy Eagles fight hard during their season opener against PAC.
The Newberry Academy Eagles kicked off their baseball season on March 19, only to fall short against the Providence Athletic Club with a final score of 19-8. This opening match, originally set for March 11, faced cancellation due to bad weather. Despite the loss pushing their record to 0-3, glimmers of hope emerged with standout performances from players like Thomas McLean. Looking ahead, the Eagles aim to turn their season around in upcoming games against Wardlaw Academy and King Academy.
Newberry, a small town with great spirit, had its baseball season kick off on a vibrant Wednesday evening, March 19. This highly anticipated season opener for the Newberry Academy Eagles varsity baseball team turned into a real nail-biter as they went head-to-head against the formidable Providence Athletic Club (PAC). Unfortunately for the Eagles and their loyal fans, the game concluded with a score of 19-8 in favor of PAC, pushing Newberry’s season record down to 0-3 and their region record to 0-1.
Fans were eagerly awaiting what was supposed to be the home opener on March 11 against Laurens Academy, but Mother Nature had other plans, and the game was canceled due to foul weather. This season is particularly special as it is the first under the guidance of new head coach Ronny ‘Coach B’ Bannister. While he is no stranger to the field, leading the team to playoff glory in his first year, this season presents new challenges. One of those challenges became evident quickly as the Eagles fell behind early in the game.
The game started on a rocky note for the Eagles, as they fell behind 2-0 right off the bat. Recognizing the need for a shift in momentum, Coach Bannister made a pitching change to shake things up. Unfortunately, the Eagles allowed three more runs in the first inning, leaving them trailing 5-1.
But wait! It wasn’t all doom and gloom! Junior outfielder Thomas McLean stepped up in a big way, nailing a double during his first at-bat and injecting some much-needed energy into his teammates. Just when the spirits started to lift, Jody Ray Miles made it onto the bases after a mishap with a throw, allowing McLean to sprint home and score Newberry’s very first run of the game!
As the game progressed into the second inning, PAC came out swinging and ended up scoring a whopping 12 runs, with the Eagles struggling to keep up. The Newberry Academy coaches decided to bring in two more pitchers, trying to manage the situation. Miles even took a turn on the mound for a brief moment, but it was Emory Pye who eventually proved effective, pitching for 2.2 innings and notching five strikeouts.
Newberry Academy wasn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet! They managed to rally, scoring two runs in the third inning with the help of a clever sacrifice bunt after getting two runners on base. With a score of 12-5 heading into the fourth inning, there was a glimmer of hope for a comeback!
Both teams put in the effort, scoring two runs each during the fourth inning. PAC ended the inning with a lead of 14-7 as they headed into the fifth.
As momentum turned once more, PAC tacked on five additional runs during the fifth inning, bringing the overwhelming score to 19-7. Newberry Academy managed to scrape together one more run, but it wasn’t enough to extend the game, leaving them with a tough home loss to chew on.
After taking a well-deserved day off, the Eagles faced another tough opponent on March 21, where they contended against Wardlaw Academy and narrowly missed a win with a score of 4-3. The Eagles are gearing up to meet King Academy next on March 25, followed by a rematch on March 28. We hope the Eagles channel their fighting spirit to turn things around this season!
