Newberry’s Baseball Team Faces Challenges in Recent Matchups

Over in Newberry, the excitement for high school baseball continues, but the local varsity team has faced some tough battles lately. The Bulldogs have played two recent games against Fox Creek and Mid-Carolina, both of which didn’t quite go as planned, leading to lessons learned on the field.

First Game: A Tough Loss Against Fox Creek

The first matchup took place at home on the evening of March 18, where Newberry faced off against Fox Creek. Despite a promising start that had fans cheering, the Bulldogs fell short with a final score of 9-2.

Mason Mills, who had a solid first inning, took the mound for his second start of the season. The game showed promise early on as the score remained 0-0 after the first inning. However, the tide turned when disaster struck in the second inning. Fox Creek exploded for six runs, largely thanks to a bad throw and an error from a young first baseman, creating some frustration among the Bulldog faithful.

Not all was lost for Newberry though, as Will Satterwhite showcased his defensive skills with *two impressive throws* to third base and home plate, helping prevent further damage during that chaotic second inning. Following that, Mills regained his composure and didn’t let any more runs cross the plate while he was pitching.

Despite the solid defensive efforts, the Bulldogs struggled to find their rhythm on offense. They managed only three hits in the first five innings and left three runners stranded, which definitely hurt their chances to claw back into the game. Cash Brown stepped in as the pitcher in the fifth inning, managing to escape a tight situation. However, the Bulldogs were already trailing 7-0.

Newberry finally broke the scoreless drought in the fifth inning thanks to an RBI single from Jackson Griffin, but by then, the damage was done. Both teams added runs in the seventh, but Fox Creek’s early lead had sealed the Bulldogs’ fate, much to the disappointment of the home crowd.

Quick Turnaround Against Whitmire

Looking to bounce back, the Bulldogs quickly set their sights on another game scheduled against Whitmire on March 20, which was especially exciting for alumni as it coincided with Alumni Night. The head coach at the time, Dylan Skinner, was hoping for a great turnout, with delicious meals provided by Coach Ware. It was a perfect opportunity for fans to rally behind their team and show some love on the field.

Facing Mid-Carolina: A Difficult Matchup

16-1 defeat. A series of challenges contributed to this disappointing outcome, including several key players being sidelined due to injuries and Skinner’s absence as he welcomed his newborn daughter.

In this game, Newberry’s lone run came in the second inning courtesy of a sacrifice ground out by Satterwhite, barely enough to spark hope among the supporters. Mid-Carolina, however, found their stride with a roof-raising three-run home run by Kade Tedder in the third inning, followed by a further surge in the fourth inning that put the game well out of reach.

After a particularly rough inning capped off by a home run from Chance McDermott, the game was called prematurely. Interim head coach Trey Kinnard emphasized the importance of competition and improvement moving forward, recognizing the need for the team to regroup and refocus.

Looking Ahead

Despite these setbacks, the Bulldogs are not down for the count. They are scheduled to face Keenan at home on April 1 for an important region matchup, ready to showcase their talent and passion for the game. With a current record of 3-2 and a 2-1 standing in Region 5-AAA, hopes remain high that the Bulldogs can find their footing and make a strong comeback.

Newberry fans are encouraged to continue supporting their team as they navigate through these challenging times. Go Bulldogs!
