With both high school and middle school teams showcasing outstanding performances, fans are eager to see how the season unfolds. Upcoming matchups promise thrilling action, as teams strive to turn their fortunes around amidst ongoing competition.
This week in Newberry, the air was electric as high school basketball action kicked off with some hot rivalry matchups. On January 3rd, both the Newberry and Mid-Carolina teams faced off, and it was a night filled with intense competition and excitement that had fans on the edge of their seats!
First up, the Mid-Carolina Lady Rebels took on the Newberry Lady Bulldogs and came out on top with a final score of 58-44. This victory was significant as it marked Mid-Carolina’s first win after a challenging four-game losing streak, improving their overall record to 3-9. Meanwhile, the Newberry Lady Bulldogs found their record slipping to 4-10 after this latest setback.
From the get-go, the Lady Rebels jumped out to a commanding lead, finishing the first quarter with a score of 22-7. Although the Lady Bulldogs showed heart in the second quarter by battling back to score 19 points, they still faced a daunting halftime score of 35-19.
Things didn’t let up in the second half, where Newberry outscored their rivals 25-23, showcasing their determination. Yet, they simply couldn’t close the gap enough to claim victory. This loss continued a challenging streak for the Bulldogs, marking their sixth loss in just seven games. Looking forward, the Bulldogs are preparing for a clash against Irmo on January 7th, hoping to find a way to regroup and turn their fortunes around.
On the boys’ side, the Newberry Bulldogs found success against Mid-Carolina with a decisive 52-33 triumph. This brings the Bulldogs’ record to 6-8 while dropping Mid-Carolina to 2-9. Newberry started strong, jumping ahead with a 9-2 run and maintaining their lead throughout the game.
Mid-Carolina struggled to find their rhythm, particularly in the second quarter, where they only managed to score three points. At halftime, Newberry held the commanding lead of 27-8. Throughout the game, the Bulldogs continued to pressure the Mid-Carolina offense, limiting their scoring opportunities. Junior point guard Jay Gallman for Mid-Carolina was the lone standout, scoring 10 points, but it wasn’t enough to shift momentum.
Newberry’s guard play, led by Caldwell’s 15 points, showcased a strong team effort despite some challenges on the court. The head coach noted the need for fewer turnovers and more consistent ball movement, pointing out that they recorded 12 turnovers during the game.
And it’s not just the high school teams making headlines! The Newberry Middle School girls’ basketball team has had an impressive start to the season with a record of 5-1. Their latest victory came against White Knoll Middle School, ending that matchup with a score of 27-13. The boys’ team has been on fire too, remaining undefeated at 6-0 while averaging an impressive 56.2 points per game. They recently crushed White Knoll by 57-29.
As both middle school teams gear up for their next encounter against Mid-Carolina on January 9th, 2025, the excitement in Newberry continues to build. Fans are eagerly anticipating how the younger players will perform, especially given the impressive margins they’ve achieved so far this season.
With exciting matchups lined up ahead, the Newberry basketball programs are hoping for continued success as they navigate the season. Whether it’s the high school or middle school teams, fans in Newberry have a lot to cheer for as they follow this thrilling basketball rivalry!
