This week in Newberry, the air was electric as high school basketball action kicked off with some hot rivalry matchups. On January 3rd, both the Newberry and Mid-Carolina teams faced off, and it was a night filled with intense competition and excitement that had fans on the edge of their seats!
First up, the Mid-Carolina Lady Rebels took on the Newberry Lady Bulldogs and came out on top with a final score of 58-44. This victory was significant as it marked Mid-Carolina’s first win after a challenging four-game losing streak, improving their overall record to 3-9. Meanwhile, the Newberry Lady Bulldogs found their record slipping to 4-10 after this latest setback.
From the get-go, the Lady Rebels jumped out to a commanding lead, finishing the first quarter with a score of 22-7. Although the Lady Bulldogs showed heart in the second quarter by battling back to score 19 points, they still faced a daunting halftime score of 35-19.

Mid-Carolina struggled to find their rhythm, particularly in the second quarter, where they only managed to score three points. At halftime, Newberry held the commanding lead of 27-8. Throughout the game, the Bulldogs continued to pressure the Mid-Carolina offense, limiting their scoring opportunities. Junior point guard Jay Gallman for Mid-Carolina was the lone standout, scoring 10 points, but it wasn’t enough to shift momentum.
Newberry’s guard play, led by Caldwell’s 15 points, showcased a strong team effort despite some challenges on the court. The head coach noted the need for fewer turnovers and more consistent ball movement, pointing out that they recorded 12 turnovers during the game.
