Newberry Bulldogs Triumph with 48-0 Victory in State Playoff Opener

Newberry Bulldogs Dominate in First Round of State Playoffs

NEWBERRY — The atmosphere was electric at Mike Ware Field this past Friday night as the Newberry Bulldogs took on the visiting Georgetown Bulldogs in the first round of the state playoffs. With a season record of 7-3 and a perfect 4-0 in Region 4-AAA, Newberry was ready to show why they were the favorites. The game ended with a resounding score of 48-0, propelling Newberry into the second round of the playoffs.

Fast Start for the Home Team

Right from the get-go, Newberry made their intentions clear. They received the opening kick-off and wasted no time in setting the tone for the game. On their very first possession, BJ Jones made headlines by taking a screen pass a remarkable 30 yards into the end zone, putting Newberry up by a quick touchdown. However, things weren’t smooth sailing for long as the offense encountered trouble with Georgetown’s defense, resulting in two sacks during the first quarter.

Second Quarter Explosion

As the second quarter rolled around, Newberry flipped the switch and began to dominate the field. They scored an astounding 28 unanswered points, with each touchdown pushing the excitement level even higher. First, Ty Abrams rushed for a 27-yard touchdown. The defense played a crucial role here, forcing Georgetown into a three-and-out and seizing the momentum once again.

In a flash, the Bulldogs showcased impressive teamwork in a three-play drive that concluded with CJ Earl grabbing a 37-yard touchdown off a short pass. And just when it seemed Georgetown might catch a break, Kilmarion Davis nabbed an interception that had everyone on the edge of their seats. Although his touchdown return was nullified by a penalty, Newberry didn’t lose focus and stormed back with Jones rushing for another score, this time from 37 yards out.

Newberry wasn’t done yet. Isaiah Glymph stepped up to intercept the ball on the following drive, allowing his team to push back into favorable territory for a new drive. And guess who found the end zone again? You guessed it! BJ Jones capped things off with a 10-yard touchdown run, wrapping up an exhilarating first half with Newberry ahead 35-0.

A Defensive Standoff and A Final Touchdown

After the halftime break, Newberry returned to the field with incredible energy. They struck again early in the third quarter when CJ Earl dashed down the field for a 42-yard punt return touchdown, pushing the score to 42-0. Georgetown attempted to fight back, even managing to block a punt and recover it at Newberry’s two-yard line. But the home team’s defense remained resilient, making a stand that kept their shutout intact.

As the fourth quarter progressed, Ty Abrams sealed the deal with one more touchdown, finally giving the fans a moment to celebrate the culmination of a well-fought game. The final whistle blew, and Newberry had achieved a spectacular win.

Looking Ahead

Head Coach Cedrick Jeter couldn’t have been more pleased with his team’s performance. “It’s the playoffs! That’s enough said right there. We are focused on the long run here, trying to make a run,” he said, emphasizing the team’s commitment to future games.

As the excitement settles, the Bulldogs will prepare to host Dillon next Friday, November 22nd, for the second round of the playoffs. If this game is any indication, fans can expect another thrilling night of football. So, mark your calendars! Newberry football is well and truly on a roll.
