Newberry Community Grieves as Mother and Toddler Prepare for Final Rest

Newberry, S.C. – The small town of Newberry is coming together to honor the lives of LaRhonda Gibson, 47, and her young son, Ketron Gibson Jr., who tragically lost their lives in a car accident last week. Their funeral service is set for Friday, September 6, at Brookland Baptist Church in West Columbia.

The heartbreaking incident occurred early in the morning on Thursday, August 29, when LaRhonda was driving with her 23-month-old son on I-26 West, just near mile marker 90. The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported that the crash happened around 2:45 AM. At the time of the accident, they were traveling in a Nissan sedan, following behind a large tractor-trailer.

Details of the Crash

Traffic on the highway had slowed down, and both the Nissan and the tractor-trailer were reducing their speed. Unfortunately, a Dodge Ram pickup truck collided with the back of LaRhonda’s sedan. The force of the impact pushed the Nissan into the rear of the tractor-trailer, leading to the tragic outcome.

Authorities were called to manage the scene, and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office later confirmed the identities of the victims. The news of LaRhonda and Ketron’s deaths struck a deep chord within the Newberry community, stirring sadness and prompting an outpouring of support for the family.

Funeral Service Arrangements

The service to celebrate their lives will commence at 11 a.m. on Friday at Brookland Baptist Church. Family and friends are expected to gather to pay their respects and share memories of the beloved mother and son.
