Newberry College athletes demonstrate their skills in the newly renovated MacLean Gymnasium.
Newberry College has officially introduced its Acrobatics & Tumbling program with an exciting first competition against King University. Although the Wolves scored 74.775 points, King University topped the event with 218.740 points. This launch aligns with the celebration of National Girls & Women in Sports Day, emphasizing the importance of female athletes. The team is set to further develop their skills with upcoming competitions, and the event marked a significant step in the growth of the program within the newly renovated MacLean Gymnasium.
Newberry, SC – Excitement was in the air as Newberry College launched its long-awaited Acrobatics & Tumbling program in a thrilling first competition against King University from Tennessee. The atmosphere was electric as the dedicated athletes hit the mats, showcasing their hard work and commitment to the new sport.
During this debut competition, the Wolves scored 74.775 points, while King University took home the win with an impressive 218.740 points. While the score may not reflect a victory for Newberry, the event was truly a celebration of the sport, and a stepping stone for future competitions.
Among the top performers for Newberry was StellaGrace Allen. This talented athlete participated in multiple events, including compulsory acro, pyramid, and toss – proving her prowess as she lit up the mat. Her dedication was also evident in events like inversion pyramid and all three heats of toss. Another standout athlete was Hannah Ghaly, who shined in compulsory acro, five-element acro, and trio tumbling. These athletes really carried the team spirit throughout the match.
Taking a closer look at the scores, Newberry College achieved its highest points in the Pyramid portion with 19.75 points out of a possible 30. The Tumbling event saw them score 23.125 points out of 60, while the Acro event and Toss events recorded 11.05 points and 10.60 points, respectively. Each event was a valuable learning experience for these athletes.
This debut event was specially timed to coincide with the celebration of the 2025 National Girls & Women in Sports Day. A significant occasion that emphasizes the importance of female athletes in shaping the future of sports, the event could not have been more fitting for the launch of this new program at Newberry.
The Wolves are already gearing up for their next competition scheduled for Friday, February 14, against Limestone College. Fans and family can look forward to seeing how the team continues to evolve and grow as they build upon this initial experience.
The home of the acrobatics & tumbling team, MacLean Gymnasium, has recently undergone major renovations, turning it into a state-of-the-art facility. These exciting upgrades included refinishing the iconic playing floor, replacing damaged boards, and adding much-needed heating and air conditioning. The gym will not only serve as the training ground for the women’s acrobatics & tumbling team but also for cheerleading and the Dance Team, ensuring a hub for athletic excellence.
The renovations also come with a heartfelt dedication in memory of former coach Nield Gordon, recognized for coaching the Newberry men’s basketball team from 1963 to 1977. Gordon is celebrated for leading the only undefeated college team in the country during his final season, and his legacy remains a beacon of inspiration for Newberry athletes.
MacLean Gymnasium has stood as a versatile venue since its construction in 1923, hosting a variety of sports and events over the decades. The blend of historical significance with modern enhancements creates a perfect backdrop for the burgeoning Acrobatics & Tumbling program.
