Jay Snyder Takes Over as New Head Coach of Newberry College Baseball

Newberry – Newberry College has officially announced that Jay Snyder has been promoted to the position of head coach for the Wolves baseball team. This decision comes as Snyder steps into the role previously held by Russell Triplett, who has been with the program for 14 seasons.

This Promotion Marks a New Chapter

Snyder, who joined the Newberry program in 2008, was elevated to associate head coach in 2014. Known for his significant role as the third base coach, Snyder’s promotion reflects the college’s trust in his capabilities to maintain and build upon the successful legacy established by Triplett, who led the Wolves to 418 wins, two South Atlantic Conference (SAC) championships, and multiple NCAA Tournament appearances.

In a statement regarding his promotion, Snyder expressed gratitude towards Newberry’s administration. “I’m extremely honored and blessed to be named the next head coach of the Wolves program,” he said. He highlighted the emotional support he received from players and the community, stating, “This support is the true definition of what makes Newberry College so special and that’s ‘The People.’”

A History of Success

Over his 16 seasons with the baseball program, Snyder has significantly contributed to the team’s achievements on and off the field. Under his guidance, the Wolves have accumulated an impressive record of 460 wins and have consistently ranked high academically, securing the top team GPA in the South Atlantic Conference for the past decade.

This past season was particularly exciting for the Wolves, who bounced back from a rocky start of 4-14 to finish the season strong. Winning 22 out of the last 36 games, including 17 of their final 24 conference games, the team secured a tie for third place in the SAC standings and reached the championship game of the opening round tournament.

Recognizing IndividualAchievements

Among the Wolves’ standout players this past season was center fielder Donovan Ford, who received All-America honors. Additionally, pitchers Matias Marchesini and Hunter French made their mark by being named to the all-conference team. Five student-athletes also earned spots on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team, reflecting the program’s commitment to both sports and academics.

A Bright Future Ahead

In the last eleven seasons, the Newberry Wolves baseball team has had at least 30 wins in seven of those years, including a school-record 43 victories in 2023. They also secured the SAC regular-season and tournament titles and made history with their first-ever NCAA Tournament win.

Snyder’s extensive coaching experience began at Keystone College, where he developed a strong reputation as a hitting coach and recruiting coordinator before joining Newberry. His coaching career has been marked by numerous accolades and a track record of success, laying a stable foundation for the Wolves’ future.

Wrap-Up

As he embarks on this new journey, Snyder is committed to continuing the tradition of excellence at Newberry College. He aims to ensure that the program remains a competitive force in collegiate baseball while nurturing the academic success of his players.

For those cheering on the Wolves, there is a sense of excitement in the air as Jay Snyder takes the helm, ready to lead this team into a new era of success. Go Wolves!
