Newberry, South Carolina – A Tale of Two Games: Women’s Team Falls Short While Men’s Team Triumphs

It was an eventful day at Eleazer Arena in Newberry, where the atmosphere was electric as the Newberry College women’s basketball team took on Anderson University on Senior Night. The crowd was packed, with students and locals coming out in full support of the Wolves. However, despite the enthusiasm, the evening ended in disappointment for the women’s team as they fell to Anderson with a final score of 62-50.

Women’s Team Struggles Early but Shows Heart

The game was a rollercoaster from the start. In the first quarter, Newberry found themselves in a tough spot, shooting a mere 16% (3-for-19) and lagging behind as Anderson grabbed a 20-9 lead by the end of the period. Understandably, this left some fans nervous, but the Wolves weren’t ready to throw in the towel just yet.

As the second quarter kicked off, Newberry showed some fighting spirit. The team stepped up its game, outscoring Anderson 19-12, and successfully trimmed the deficit to 32-28 at halftime. The momentum shifted dramatically, especially after a thrilling half-court shot at the buzzer, sending cheers through the stands and infusing the Wolves with a sense of hope.

Unfortunately, the second half posed more challenges for Newberry. As the third quarter unfolded, the Wolves managed to score only five points, leaving them down 52-33 by the end of the period. Nonetheless, they showcased their tenacity on defense by holding Anderson to just 10 points in the final quarter, forcing the visitors to shoot only 33%. However, try as they might, the Newberry ladies couldn’t claw their way back into the game.

Even in defeat, the Wolves’ head coach praised the players for their relentless energy and effort, emphasizing that the spirit of this team shines brighter than the scoreboard reflects. Jess Thomkins notched a solid performance, recording a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Caylin Moment contributed 8 points and 4 rebounds, proving to be a valuable asset off the bench. The support from the Newberry community was heartfelt, and Coach Walker expressed gratitude for everyone who turned out to cheer on the team.

The Wolves now prepare for their last game of the season against Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday, March 1st, at 2:00 p.m., as they look to end the season on a high note.

Men’s Team Claws Out a Close Win

Shifting gears to the men’s team, the mood was quite different as they celebrated a hard-fought victory against UVA Wise with a score of 77-72. The atmosphere in the arena was alive with excitement as the players strutted their stuff on the court.

Leading the charge for Newberry was Devario Sheppard, who put up an impressive 22 points, along with 4 assists and 1 block. He was ably supported by Drake Downs with 17 points and Gyterson Louissaint contributing 15 points. Drew Robinson also played a key role, sinking 3-of-5 three-pointers for a total of 14 points.

In the first half, the Wolves muscled their way to a 41-33 lead, boasting an impressive shooting percentage of 53%. As the game progressed, they even held a comfortable 14-point lead with just over six minutes to go, standing at 64-50. However, the Cavaliers made things interesting as they closed the gap to 75-72 with only 21 seconds remaining on the clock.

Thanks to their disciplined defense, the Wolves managed to force some turnovers and ultimately sealed the win with free throws from Robinson in the final moments. With this victory, the men’s team is now looking forward to their next contest against Coker on Wednesday night.

It’s a bittersweet week for Newberry College athletics, but for both teams, the heart and passion displayed on the court promise a bright future ahead!
