News Summary

The Newberry College men’s basketball team faced a challenging road trip in Tennessee, suffering heartbreaking losses against Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial. After a promising season start, the Wolves found themselves struggling on the road, with standout performances overshadowed by team defeats. Looking ahead, the team aims to bounce back in their upcoming home game against UVA Wise.

Newberry College Men’s Basketball Team Faces Tough Time on Tennessee Road Trip

In a challenging weekend for the Newberry College men’s basketball team, the Wolves embarked on a two-game road trip through Tennessee, resulting in heartbreaking losses that put a damper on the squad’s momentum. After a strong start to the season, Newberry hit a rough patch, struggling to find their rhythm on the road.

Heartbreaking Loss Against Carson-Newman

The first game unfolded on February 8, where Newberry went head-to-head with Carson-Newman. In a thrilling yet disappointing matchup, the Wolves fell short, losing with a final score of 111-104. The game showcased some impressive stats, particularly from key players who stepped up to the challenge.

Devario Sheppard emerged as a star of the night, racking up a staggering 32 points and pulling down 11 rebounds, securing a double-double. He showcased his skill with a solid shooting performance, hitting 12-of-20 from the field, including three long-range three-pointers. Adding to the excitement, he also dished out three assists and made a pivotal block.

Following closely behind were Drake Downs who contributed 27 points and seven rebounds, along with James Lovorn who tossed in 16 points thanks to four three-pointers. Drew Robinson also played a vital role, finishing the night with 18 points, seven assists, and two steals.

Despite entering halftime trailing 42-37, the Wolves came out strong in the second half, scoring an impressive 67 points. They were particularly effective in transition, marking 34 fast-break points and dominating the boards with 15 offensive rebounds to Carson-Newman’s seven. The team’s ball movement was also commendable, racking up 20 assists while maintaining just four turnovers. From the free-throw line, Newberry shot an admirable 76.2%, converting 16 of 21 attempts.

Lincoln Memorial Proves Too Strong

Next up on February 9, the Wolves faced Lincoln Memorial, hoping to bounce back from their previous defeat. Unfortunately, the outcome wasn’t what they had hoped for, ending the game at 75-54 against a strong Lincoln Memorial side. With this loss, Newberry’s overall record slipped to 10-13 and 7-12 within the South Atlantic Conference.

The game did not start favorably for Newberry, as they found themselves trailing significantly, with a halftime score of 38-17. Nevertheless, the Wolves managed to rally and score 37 points in the second half, showcasing their determination. Malakhi Stremlow led with a double-double of his own, contributing 14 points alongside 10 rebounds. Devario Sheppard continued his scoring streak with 13 points and three steals, while Drew Robinson added his share with seven points and four rebounds.

Newberry managed to score 24 points in the paint, capitalizing on Lincoln Memorial’s turnovers for another eight points. They maintained a shooting percentage of 72.7% from the free-throw line, knocking down 8-of-11 attempts, and managed to hit six three-pointers during the contest. Defensively, they did force 11 turnovers while racking up six steals, demonstrating resilience despite the scoreboard.

Looking Ahead

As the Wolves reflect on a tough weekend, they will be eager to turn the tide in their upcoming game against UVA Wise at home on February 15 at 4 PM. As Newberry looks to regain their footing in the conference, fans are hopeful that they’ll bring their best effort to reclaim their winning ways. With their talented roster and a few tweaks, the Wolves are more than capable of bouncing back strong.
