Newberry College Takes a Thrilling Win Against Anderson in Final Home Game

In the bustling city of Newberry, an electric atmosphere filled the gym as the Newberry College Wolves men’s basketball team faced off against the Anderson University Trojans on February 26th. With a crowd eager to see their team in action, the Wolves brought home a nail-biting victory, finishing the game at 78-73.

A Rocky Start

The game didn’t start off on the best foot for the Wolves, as they quickly found themselves in a hole, trailing 10-3 early in the first half. Facing a challenging opponent, the Wolves quickly called for a timeout to regroup and strategize.

Post-timeout, the players evidently shifted gears. The energy picked up, and Newberry began to chip away at Anderson’s lead. However, they faced struggles on defense, particularly with Anderson’s aggressive inside game, which led to some early foul trouble for the Wolves. But a few standout performances kept Newberry in the clash. Devario Shepard and James Lovorn stepped up their game to keep the contest competitive.

First Half Wrap-Up

As the first half came to a close, Newberry managed to sprint ahead, finishing strong with a 5-0 run, although they still trailed at 30-27. It was clear that adjustments needed to be made for a stronger showing in the second half.

Second Half Surge

As the second half kicked off, fans could sense that the Wolves were ready to roar. Scoring picked up as both teams fought hard for every point. Unfortunately, Newberry faced a hurdle when they were assessed a technical foul; it could have been a major setback, but instead became a catalyst for change.

Drew Robinson emerged as the game’s star, finishing with a whopping 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Leading a critical 7-0 run, he infused life back into the Wolves and helped regain their lead in the dying moments of the game. Newberry continued to ride that momentum and went on an impressive 13-3 run, stretching their lead to 10 points at 69-59, leaving the crowd cheering wildly.

Supporting Cast Shines

The contributions didn’t stop with Robinson, as James Lovorn added 18 points—including three three-pointers—and Devario Shepard offered his support with 10 points. Even Malakhi Stremlow pitched in with 9 points and 10 rebounds, showcasing the team’s depth and collaborative effort on the court.

Looking Ahead

However, the Wolves faced a tougher challenge shortly after, falling to Carson-Newman, 98-85, on March 1st. Despite the loss, Newberry demonstrated resilience, shooting 45% from the field and landing an impressive ten three-pointers. They also capitalized on their free-throw opportunities, earning 39 attempts and converting 27 of those.

Drake Downs led the charge in the game against Carson-Newman with 20 points, while Drew RobinsonMalakhi Stremlow each added 13 points, keeping spirits high despite the setback.

Season Reflection and Future Goals

As the season progresses, Newberry has improved significantly since last year, boasting a record of 13-14 overall and 10-13 in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC), compared to an 8-17 overall record and 7-13 in SAC play last season. Head Coach Marcus Kirkland stressed the upcoming games’ importance regarding postseason opportunities, underscoring the need for continued team effort and resilience.

The Newberry College Wolves are gearing up and ready to take on the next challenges, showcasing a drive and camaraderie that has both fans and players excited for what lies ahead. With a strong finish to their home season, the Wolves will look to carry that momentum as they approach the postseason!
