Exciting Changes Ahead for Newberry College Football Team!

Newberry, get ready to rally behind your spirited Wolves! The Newberry College football team is gearing up for a big spring practice, kicking off on March 24. Fans can mark their calendars because the annual spring game is set for April 26 at noon, promising a day filled with thrilling football action.

A Look Back at the Recent Seasons

The last couple of seasons haven’t been smooth sailing for the Wolves, as they faced back-to-back losing records. In 2024, the team ended with a 3-7 record, leaving die-hard fans wishing for better results. However, it’s important to remember that the Wolves were competitive within the South Atlantic Conference (SAC), showing resilience despite the less-than-desired outcomes.

Unfortunately, a homecoming loss to Limestone put the brakes on what could have been a more promising season. A key challenge for the Wolves has been achieving consistent quarterback play, something that has hampered their performance over the last two years. This issue is expected to be a major focus during the upcoming spring practice and fall camp, making the quarterback position battle one of the most exciting elements of the season ahead.

Big Shoes to Fill on Defense

On the defensive side of things, the Wolves will need to step it up as they prepare to replace some significant talents. The team has lost crucial players like Luke Taylor, Colby Taylor, and Chucky Roach, each contributing over 40 tackles last season. Colby Taylor, in particular, led the pack with 7 sacks and an impressive 14.5 tackles for loss. Replacing this depth will be no small task for the Wolves, and fans are eager to see who will rise to the occasion.

Offensive Adjustments Needed

The offense is also bracing for change, especially at running back. With the departure of Trakell Murray, who was third on the team in carries with 45 and fourth in rushing yards with 171, the Wolves must search for new talent to carry the load. Murray, who showed flashes of brilliance with a standout previous season featuring 537 rushing yards and four touchdowns, had a decline in performance this past year. Fans are hopeful that new players can step in and deliver dependable performances on the ground.

Coaching Changes Spark Excitement

In an exciting development, head coach Todd Knight has made some key coaching changes heading into the 2025 season. He has welcomed back former player Deshun Kitchens to the coaching staff. Having played at Newberry College between 2018-2022, Kitchens is not only familiar with the team culture but is also known as a remarkable playmaker during his time on the field.

Deshun will be taking the reins as the coach for tight ends and H-backs, stepping in for Dre Harris. This change has stirred up enthusiasm among fans, especially given Kitchens’ impressive track record. During his college career, he ranked eighth in Newberry’s career receiving yards with a remarkable 1,773 yards. His standout season in 2022 showcased his talent with 646 receiving yards and four touchdowns, along with an impressive 31.2 yards per kick return.

Before jumping back into the Wolves’ fold, Kitchens honed his coaching skills at South Aiken High School. Fans are excited to see how his NFL experience and innovative coaching style will influence the team’s strategies going forward.

What’s Next?

As the Wolves move into spring practice, the hopes are high in Newberry. With new faces and strategies in play, the upcoming season presents the opportunity for a fresh start. Coaches, players, and fans will come together in the spirit of football, all looking forward to a thrilling spring game on April 26! Let’s cheer on our team as they work hard to make this new chapter one for the books!
