The Newberry College men’s golf team concluded the Bearcat Golf Classic in Greenwood, SC, securing 18th place with a score of 300 (+12). Despite not achieving their desired podium finish, the team gained valuable experience and showed promising performances, especially from Tom Hull, who recorded a remarkable round of 68 (-4) on the second day. The Wolves look to build on this effort as they prepare for upcoming competitions, including a match against Lincoln Memorial.
The sun shone brightly over Greenwood, South Carolina, as the Newberry College men’s golf team took to the lush greens of the Greenwood Country Club for the annual Bearcat Golf Classic, hosted by Lander University. With 19 teams vying for the top spot, the competition was fierce, and the atmosphere was charged with excitement.
After two days of swinging clubs and hitting the fairways, the Newberry Wolves finished in 18th place with a team score of 300 (+12). Not quite the podium finish they were aiming for, but the experience gained on the course is invaluable for these budding golfers.
On the first day of the tournament, which took place on March 3rd, the Wolves started strong with an opening score of 304, initially landing them in a tie for 16th place. Herman du Plessis and Tom Hull led the way for the team, each carding an impressive 75 (+2), which placed them tied for 46th overall. Jesper Grendeman followed closely with a 76 (+4), earning a tie for 60th place.
Carlos Camarous-Ruiz showed spirit, finishing with a score of 78 (+6) and landing in a tie for 79th, while Christian Kuehl rounded out the team’s scoring efforts with 81 (+9), placing him tied for 98th.
As the sun rose on the second day, the Wolves were determined to improve their standings. Tom Hull emerged as a standout player, showcasing his skill with a remarkable round of 68 (-4), which earned him a tie for 41st overall. This impressive performance not only boosted his confidence but invigorated the team spirit.
Christian Kuehl held his ground with a solid 76 (+4), finishing in a tie for 81st. Meanwhile, Herman du Plessis and Carlos Camarous-Ruiz both recorded scores of 78 (+6), which put them in a tie for 62nd place. Jesper Grendeman, although rounding out the team scoring with an 84 (+12), certainly gave his all on the course.
While the 18th place finish might not be what the team hoped for, there are plenty of lessons learned and experiences gained to take with them into future competitions. With every shot and swing, the team is building resilience and skill, laying the foundation for better performances down the road.
The Newberry Wolves will have another chance to showcase their prowess on the course when they compete against Lincoln Memorial on March 24-25. With their heads held high and a determination to improve, this team is ready for the challenge, and fans can expect great things moving forward!
