Newberry College Softball Hits the Field with Mixed Results Against Flagler

This past weekend, the softball team at Newberry College faced off against the Flagler College Saints in a thrilling doubleheader filled with excitement and some hard-fought competition. The day began on a high note for the Wolves as they notched up a victory in Game 1, but the momentum shifted during Game 2.

Game 1: A Nail-Biter!

In Game 1, Newberry’s players came ready to give it their all. They scored one run in the first inning and added another in the second. This early lead set the tone for what would be a remarkable game, characterized by strong pitching and solid defense. The Wolves played like a well-oiled machine, committing no errors and recording an impressive 21 putouts.

On the mound, pitcher N. Wescott delivered a stellar performance, completing the game with only one earned run allowed, while striking out six batters and letting up seven hits. At the plate, Newberry’s M. Brown was a standout with two hits in three at-bats, including a double that drove in one run, while B. HodgesH. Campbell, who added an important RBI.

Game 2: An Upset

6-3. Unfortunately for Newberry, defense was not as tight as it had been in the earlier game, allowing six earned runs over the course of seven innings.

Embry-Riddle Tournament Showdown

After their doubleheader against Flagler, the Wolves traveled to compete at the Embry-Riddle Tournament, where they had a challenging time. In their first match against Auburn Montgomery, Newberry fell short with a score of 6-3. Here, Taylor Palfrey2-for-4 and helping the team with a stolen base. Additionally, Bethany Pigg drove in a crucial run in the fourth inning, while pitcher Lex Glemaker had a solid performance on the mound, pitching four innings without allowing any earned runs and striking out three batters.

In the second challenge of the tournament against Florida Tech, Newberry managed to score first but then faced a comeback, ultimately losing 2-1. Glemaker pitched impressively again, this time going 5.1 innings and allowing just two earned runs. Unfortunately, the team could only muster up four hits during that game.

Final Tournament Game: Another Tough Loss

In their final game against the host team, Embry-Riddle, Newberry fell short with a 7-4 defeat. Despite strong efforts from players like Brooke Hodges and Samantha Clark, who provided key hits, and Taylor Palfrey, who went 1-for-3 with a run scored, it remained a tough matchup. Newberry rallied in the late innings with an RBI walk from Ella Stone and a sacrifice fly from Staples, but they couldn’t close the gap in the end.

The Road Ahead

1-8
on the season, but with a spirited roster and promising performances, fans are keeping their hopes high. Their next test is a doubleheader against UNC Pembroke on February 14th, starting at 1 PM and 3 PM. The team is looking for a moment to shine and turn their luck around!
