This past weekend, Newberry College athletics showcased thrilling performances, with the men’s lacrosse team facing Limestone and the women’s team celebrating a decisive win against Catawba. Meanwhile, the acrobatics and tumbling team closed their season with a solid showing in a tri-meet, demonstrating growth and determination. In beautiful Newberry, South Carolina, the local sports scene was buzzing this past weekend with some exciting matchups for the Newberry College athletics teams. Fans were on the edge of their seats as they cheered for their favorite teams, witnessing moments of triumph and resilience in various events.
The No. 13 Newberry College men’s lacrosse team faced a tough opponent in No. 3 Limestone during an afternoon showdown in Gaffney, S.C., on Saturday. Although the Wolves put up a good fight, they fell short with a final score of 19-8. Despite their determination, the team found themselves in a challenging position as they entered halftime trailing 7-2.
Newberry started the game with a lot of intensity, initiating a fierce challenge right off the bat. The players showed they can hold their ground, even when the odds seemed stacked against them. Gage Vigar was the highlight of the offensive effort, scoring 3 goals and securing 2 ground balls to keep the pressure on Limestone. Meanwhile, Liam Vollans also made his mark by contributing 2 points, along with 2 ground balls and 2 caused turnovers.
Defensively, Kaleb Malyon stood out by causing 4 turnovers, disrupting Limestone’s rhythm and helping his team stay competitive. Goalkeeper Ben McMullen recorded 5 crucial saves during moments that could have easily swung in favor of the enemies. Looking ahead, the Wolves will be eager to bounce back when they face Coker on April 2 at 7 p.m..
Newberry kicked off the event with a solid showing in the Compulsory event, scoring 16.050 points. The team also impressed in the Acro event, racking up 20.550 points highlighted by strong performances in Heat 1. The team shined in the Pyramid event, achieving their highest score of the day with 23.450 points.
While the Toss event didn’t go as planned with a score of 13.150 points, the Tumbling event was a bright spot for Newberry as they scored 28.875 points. Standout performances came from several athletes, including Emily Mullins, Makayla Brown, Hannah Ghaly, Emma Pittser, and StellaGrace Allen, showcasing their hard work throughout the season. With the season now complete, there is a sense of pride in the progress and achievements made by the team.
On a much brighter note, the Newberry College women’s lacrosse team celebrated a fantastic victory against Catawba, winning by a striking score of 19-6 at Setzler Field. The team burst out of the gate, establishing an early lead in the first quarter by going up 4-2, thanks to the efforts of Senior attacker Emma Jobs, Dakota Beasley, and Serena Elias.
Emma Jobs was an absolute star, lighting up the scoreboard with an impressive 7 goals and 2 assists. Not to be outdone, Serena Elias added 5 goals and contributed an assist, proving her valuable role in the team’s success. Both Dakota Beasley and Mackenzie Watson contributed with 2 goals each, further solidifying the win and showcasing the depth of talent within the program.
This weekend was an eventful one for Newberry College athletics, with ups and downs that capture the spirit of competition and camaraderie.
