Newberry, SC – It’s been an exciting week for the Newberry College tennis teams, as both the men’s and women’s squads took to the court for a series of matches that showcased their talent and determination. The women’s tennis team truly put on a show this past week, coming away with two victories in three matches. On Thursday, March 6, they faced off against Mars Hill and made a statement by sweeping the competition with a fantastic 4-0 victory. Right from the start, Margarita Roshka and Alexa Gamborino-Suarez dominated in doubles without dropping a single game. Their matching performance was mirrored by Sofia Shaparenko and Simran Bundela, who also achieved a flawless victory in their doubles match.
Continuing their momentum, Bundela then showcased her prowess in singles with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 win. Hazel Vernon and Renee Dorval also breezed through their matches, winning 6-1, 6-0 each. The remaining singles matches saw Roshka, Gamborino-Suarez, and Arnal leading as time ran out, leaving everyone eager to see what they’d accomplish next.
In their next match against Tusculum on Saturday, March 8, while the men’s team faced some challenges, the women’s team held strong and secured a 4-2 victory. After dropping the doubles point, they rallied back with fantastic individual performances. Lina Sarhan emerged victorious with a 6-4, 7-5 scoreline, followed by Gamborino-Suarez who took home another win at 6-2, 6-3. Renee Dorval’s win of 6-3, 6-4 added to the tally, and Aina Miralles sealed the victory with a solid 6-1, 6-3 finish.
The men’s tennis team fought valiantly during the same matches, but they faced tougher competition. Their first match saw them battling it out against Mars Hill, where they finished at 4-1. While they lost the doubles point, James Vincent scored a strong singles win with a 6-2, 6-2 finish. Daniel Watson had a thrilling match that went to three sets after a tightly contested second set, and Gabriel Fernandez-Iglesias added another point for the team in a close match as well.
However, their encounter on Saturday against Tusculum was more challenging, ending in a 4-0 loss. Despite their efforts, the team wasn’t able to capitalize on their strengths, although both Vincent and Watson put up strong fights in their individual matches before time was called.
