Newberry College has announced the addition of Deborah Acquah to its track and field coaching staff. Acquah, a nine-time All-American athlete from Texas A&M, brings a wealth of experience and expertise, having excelled in both long jump and triple jump. With numerous accolades, including national runner-up positions and international competition experience for Ghana, Acquah’s appointment promises to inspire the next generation of athletes at Newberry. The college has welcomed a superstar to their coaching staff – the one and only Deborah Acquah! This remarkable athlete, known for her incredible accomplishments, is here to help mold the next generation of track and field athletes.
Deborah Acquah isn’t just any ordinary coach. She dazzled the sports world as a nine-time All-American while competing at Texas A&M University. This means she has consistently been among the best of the best! From the long jump to the triple jump, Acquah dominated the scene. She achieved three first-team All-American honors in these two events, clinching top-7 finishes at the NCAA Division 1 indoor and outdoor nationals not once but nine times!
Among her many impressive titles, Acquah became the national runner-up in the long jump at both the 2019 indoor championships and the 2022 outdoor championships. She also soared to the runner-up position in the triple jump at the 2021 indoor championships. Her success didn’t stop there; Acquah is a proud three-time West Region champion and a two-time Southeastern Conference champion!
Every athlete dreams of representing their country, and Acquah has done just that. She proudly wore the colors of Ghana at the 2016 Durban African Championships and the 2019 African Games. In a thrilling turn of events, she qualified for the World Championships not once, but twice, in 2022 and 2023. And let’s not forget her medal successes – Acquah brought home a silver medal from the All-African Games and a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games!
Acquah holds the indoor records for long jump and triple jump for Ghana, showcasing her talent and skill on a worldwide scale. Such accolades underline the fact that she is more than just an excellent athlete; she is a trailblazer in her sport!
Aside from her athletic prowess, Acquah boasts quite the academic record as well. During her time at Texas A&M, she was recognized with United States Track and Field and Cross-Country Association All-Academic honors for two consecutive years, 2021 and 2022. This recognition is no easy feat, as it requires a student-athlete to have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 while meeting specific performance criteria. She was also a fixture on the SEC Honor Roll for all four of her collegiate years!
Acquah completed her undergraduate degree in 2021 and further pursued her academic journey by earning her master’s degree in 2023. It’s clear to see that her dedication to academics is on par with her athletic achievements.
With her remarkable background, Acquah is bringing her wealth of knowledge and experience to Newberry College. Head coach Scott Hutchinson is thrilled to have someone with such high-level competitive experience joining the team. Her presence is sure to inspire and elevate the runners and jumpers, creating an electric environment for all.
