The Newberry College Wolves endured a challenging weekend as they faced the #17 Lenoir-Rhyne in a three-game series. They lost every game, including a close start on Friday, where they lost 7-4. Saturday’s doubleheader brought more heartbreak, with scores of 18-8 and 11-0. Despite notable performances from players like Logan Busenlehner and Kade Faircloth, the Wolves’ season record dipped to 12-11 overall and 4-8 in the South Atlantic Conference. They hope to recover as they prepare for their next matchup against North Greenville.
In a challenging weekend for the Newberry College Wolves, the team faced off against the highly ranked No. 17 Lenoir-Rhyne at the Smith Road Complex. This three-game series included a road game last Friday, March 7, and a doubleheader on Saturday, March 8, but sadly, the Wolves couldn’t find their rhythm and lost all three matchups.
Things kicked off on Friday with a conference matchup that ended in a 7-4 loss. The Wolves initially took the lead when Logan Busenlehner hit a two-RBI single in the second inning, giving Newberry fans a glimmer of hope. Starting pitcher Ethan LeBron showcased a solid performance by striking out six batters over six innings of play, however, the late-game surge from Lenoir-Rhyne proved too much to handle.
Busenlehner had an impressive night, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a mighty four RBIs, but unfortunately, it just wasn’t enough to keep the momentum going as the game wore on.
The action continued on Saturday with a doubleheader, and the Wolves desperately needed to turn things around. Unfortunately, the first game saw Newberry fall 18-8. It was a high-scoring affair as Kade Faircloth drove in three important runs with a thrilling three-run home run and a double. Not to be outdone, Keillor Osbon contributed with a solo home run of his own along with two RBIs. Meanwhile, Anthony Plotkin added a run-scoring double as Newberry fought hard amidst the batting onslaught.
Newberry’s Wilson Wages showed real promise, recording four hits over the course of the day. In the opener, he went 3-for-4 with a standout performance at the plate. However, despite the offensive efforts, the Wolves couldn’t outscore their opponents.
As for the second game of the doubleheader, things took a turn for the worse. Newberry was shut out 11-0, unable to find the scoreboard. It was a quiet ending to a tumultuous day.
Following these three losses, the Wolves found their season record slipping to 12-11 overall and 4-8 within the South Atlantic Conference (SAC). It’s clear that the Newberry College baseball team has some intense training and strategizing to do to get back on track.
Next up for the Wolves is a matchup against the nationally ranked North Greenville on Tuesday, March 12, at 6:00 p.m. The team will be looking to put this tough weekend behind them and claw their way back into winning form.
It’s worth noting that Newberry had also faced a challenging game just a few days prior against #5-ranked North Greenville on March 4, losing 16-6. Despite scoring first thanks to an RBI single from Cooper Gentry, the team couldn’t manage to keep up with their opponents. Though they recorded 11 hits in that game, Newberry struggled to maintain the momentum.
As the Wolves regroup and refocus, there is hope yet for a turnaround as they prepare for their upcoming games. The team has shown flashes of brilliance, and fans can expect nothing less than sheer determination in their pursuit of victory!
