The Newberry College Wolves celebrated a thrilling 71-67 victory over Emory & Henry at Eleazer Arena, improving their record to 6-6. Star performances from Devario Sheppard, who scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and notable contributions from teammates secured the win. This victory marks their second consecutive triumph in the South Atlantic Conference as the Wolves look to build further momentum for their upcoming matches.
Newberry, SC – The atmosphere buzzed with excitement at Eleazer Arena as the Newberry College Wolves secured a nail-biting, thrilling victory over Emory & Henry with a final score of 71-67. This win marks the Wolves’ second consecutive triumph in the South Atlantic Conference, bringing them back on track as they aim for greater success this season.
The game was a showcase of determination and skill, with veteran players stepping up during the crucial moments. Devario Sheppard delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. His versatility was on display as he also added 2 assists, 1 block, and 1 steal to his impressive stats. Right alongside him, Malakhi Stremlow contributed 8 points and 8 rebounds, playing a pivotal role in a critical offensive possession that helped secure free throws during the game’s tense final minutes.
As the clock ticked down to just 15 seconds remaining, Sheppard was fouled and calmly sunk two free throws, extending Newberry’s lead to 71-67. The Wolves showcased their defensive prowess by managing to hold off Emory & Henry, denying them any opportunity for a shot in the last few seconds, closing the game with a well-deserved victory.
This win is particularly sweet for Newberry, who previously faced a string of close losses earlier in the season. In fact, five of their six defeats were decided by a mere 14 points, demonstrating that they were always within striking distance. With this win, they improved their overall record to 6-6 and moved to 3-5 in the South Atlantic Conference.
Booker Cusaac also made notable contributions, scoring 13 points and adding 9 rebounds to support the team’s efforts. Cusaac has been on a roll lately, scoring in double figures in four of his last six games and averaging an impressive 8 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, James Lovorn added 12 points, underlining the depth and talent present on the team.
Rebounding played a critical role in the Wolves’ win on Saturday as they out-rebounded Emory & Henry 47-36, with a significant 20-10 advantage on offensive boards. This worked wonders for maintaining possession and creating second-chance opportunities. Guards Janyle Pittman, Drew Robinson, and Makhi Rivers bolstered the rebounding effort, ensuring that the Wolves had a strong grasp of the game throughout.
