Newberry College Launches Student-Led Sports Show Wolves Weekly Starting September 12

Exciting News from Newberry: ‘Wolves Weekly’ Takes Center Stage

Newberry, SC – There’s an air of excitement buzzing around Newberry College as the institution prepares for the launch of its very own student-led sports show, titled “Wolves Weekly.” Starting September 12, this innovative program promises to showcase the rich culture and competitive spirit of Newberry College’s 24 NCAA Division II sports teams and two spirited squads. It’s a groundbreaking initiative that positions Newberry as a pioneering force within FloSports, making it one of the first colleges to implement a broadcast entirely managed by students.

The Team Behind the Show

What’s particularly remarkable about “Wolves Weekly.” is that the entire production will be driven by students enrolled in the Professional Media in Action course. These eager young talents will serve as the cast and crew, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in broadcasting. They’ll receive mentorship from advanced communications students, ensuring that they have the support needed to produce a quality show. Leading the charge will be Dr. Jodie Peeler, professor of communications, and Al de Lachica, assistant professor of communications. Together, they will oversee the production, enabling students to take charge of the show’s content and production.

A Unique Opportunity

In a world where many large universities restrict student access to media equipment, Newberry College flips the script. According to Dr. Steven McClung, the dean of business, communications, and sport, “Our partnership allows students full access, content control, and a professional learning environment.” This hands-on approach helps students develop real-world skills they won’t find in typical classroom settings, making them highly marketable in a competitive job market after graduation.

Features to Look Forward To

As for what fans can expect from the show, “Wolves Weekly” is packed full of exciting content. The half-hour program will not only feature game analysis and predictions but will also dive deep into the lives of Newberry’s diverse community. Expect to see engaging interviews with student-athletes, coaches, alumni, and dedicated fans that celebrate the incredible spirit of Wolf Nation. Sean Johnson, the director of athletics, shared his enthusiasm, saying, “This show will take the Wolf Nation fan experience to the next level.”

Sports enthusiasts can also look forward to unique content, including thrilling “once-in-a-lifetime” plays, in-depth commentary, and fascinating behind-the-scenes features. This is truly an opportunity for students to shine and showcase their skills, while also providing fans with coverage they won’t want to miss.

More Than Just Entertainment

The launch of “Wolves Weekly” comes at a significant time as well. In 2022, the South Atlantic Conference, of which Newberry is a proud member, signed a landmark media rights agreement with FloSports—it’s the largest of its kind for NCAA Division II to date. This partnership means that FloSports will serve as the exclusive digital platform for the SAC Live Digital Network, offering live streaming and on-demand content not only for Newberry College but also for all member institutions.

What’s Further Down the Road?

Excitingly, production doesn’t stop with “Wolves Weekly.” Just around the corner, FloSports is set to launch a new platform called FloCollege, focusing on Division II and III athletic programs. This initiative will further enhance the broadcasting landscape for college sports and ensure that students and institutions alike can expand their reach.

Catch the Show!

For those eager to catch “Wolves Weekly”, tune in every Thursday on FloSports starting September 12. And don’t worry if you miss it; the show will also be available on the campus’ closed-circuit television every Friday for students to enjoy. This student-led initiative is not just about sports; it’s about fostering a sense of community, showcasing talent, and creating lasting memories for all involved. So gear up and get ready to cheer for our Wolves in this exciting new chapter!
