The picturesque town of Newberry is buzzing with excitement as the Newberry College Women’s Triathlon team prepares for an exhilarating season ahead. Head Coach Marty Owens is overflowing with enthusiasm, sharing that this could be one of the most dynamic years for the scarlet and grey squad. “The team and I are excited for this season,” he shares. “The team has been working very well together thus far in training. They have met every challenging workout with a positive attitude. This camaraderie and determination have set a strong foundation for the season ahead.”
This year, the team enters the season ranked 8th among NCAA Division-2 schools, a record that underscores the respect they have garnered through their impressive performances in previous seasons. According to Owens, “Going into the season ranked 8th is a great honor, but it also shows the respect they have earned the past few seasons as a team. This ranking reflects not only the talent within the squad but also their relentless dedication and hard work.”
The 2024 roster brings promise and depth, potentially the strongest the team has seen in its history. Kayleigh Geel, who dominated as the top finisher in every race last year, is ready to make an even bigger impact this time around. Following her commendable finish of 34th at the national championships, Geel is now targeting a spot in the top 30. Also worth keeping an eye on are Becca Hartrick and Cassi Murphy, both hoping to break into the prestigious top 50 at the NCAA National Championships after having finished 53rd and 54th, respectively, last year. Their journey toward improvement will be critical as the team aims for higher standings.
Adding an exciting twist to the team dynamics are the Laskodi twins, Timea and Anna, who hail all the way from Germany. Their competitive spirit and versatility offer a fresh strength to the squad, particularly in the draft-legal racing format. The twins are a welcome addition, bringing a new dimension to the team’s lineup.
This fall, Newberry College’s triathletes are gearing up for five races, all with a clear aim: to not only surpass their previous championship times but also achieve better placements at both the East Regional Qualifier and the NCAA National Championships. With a blend of experienced athletes and promising newcomers, the team is pumped up to take on the challenges ahead.
Fans, families, and supporters should mark their calendars for September 1st, when the team kicks off their season at Wingate University, starting bright and early at 8:00 AM. It promises to be a thrilling event as the team sets out on a season-long journey filled with determination, teamwork, and the desire to reach new heights.
As the Newberry College Women’s Triathlon team prepares to launch into their ambitious season, the spirit of community seems stronger than ever. The enthusiasm from the coaching staff and athletes reflects the supportive environment they share with their fans. With growing anticipation, everyone in Newberry is looking forward to witnessing the team’s remarkable efforts throughout the season.
