Newberry, South Carolina – The Newberry College wrestling team has officially welcomed a standout newcomer, Bashir Rostami, a freshman wrestler whose remarkable journey from an Afghanistan refugee to the mat marks a new chapter in his life. Rostami’s story is rooted in resilience and triumph, as he seeks to not only excel in wrestling but also to honor his family’s legacy.
Bashir Rostami was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, and spent his early years in the Parwan Province. After overcoming numerous challenges, his family relocated to Tampa, Florida, where Rostami completed his high school education at Freedom High School. During his senior year, he participated in wrestling and achieved an impressive record of over 20 wins with just one loss. His skills, honed through years of experience in wrestling and contact sports such as kung fu and muay thai, made him a valuable addition to the Newberry College Wolves.
Rostami’s path to America was paved by his sister, Malalai, who played a pivotal role in assisting American soldiers during their time in Afghanistan. She bravely helped in their evacuation efforts, risking her life for the safety of her family. This heroism earned her and her family the opportunity to escape the turmoil in Afghanistan and migrate to the United States.
After one year of wrestling in high school, Rostami dreams of becoming a champion in the sport. His aspirations took a hit when he was disqualified from the state championship due to unsportsmanlike behavior from an opponent. Despite this setback, he caught the attention of Newberry College’s associate wrestling coach, Bryant Blanton, who recognized Rostami’s potential and invited him for a visit to the college. Rostami’s determination and skills quickly earned him a place on the team.
Before officially joining Newberry College, Rostami needed to establish his residency status, which took nearly a year. This process, along with completing an English course at a community college, demonstrated his commitment to succeeding at the collegiate level. Blanton noted that Rostami’s determination and willingness to learn set him apart, which is crucial in wrestling and academics.
As a member of the Newberry College wrestling team, Rostami has found a supportive family within the group. He expressed enjoyment in his time at the college, stating, “I love the team; they help me a lot, even with my homework.” The team’s camaraderie and the coaches’ kindness have made his transition to college life an easier one.
Rostami’s ambitions extend beyond wrestling. He is interested in modeling and photography and plans to create a documentary film that chronicles his journey. His dedication to his faith as a practicing Muslim, which includes praying five times a day, adds another layer to his character.
Blanton and Head Coach Deral Brown have expressed excitement about what Rostami brings to the team. Brown notes that Rostami adds diversity not only in his background but also in wrestling style, having trained in freestyle, which is similar to American folkstyle wrestling.
Rostami and the Newberry College wrestling team are gearing up for their upcoming match against Lincoln Memorial University on November 6, 2024. As he embarks on this new journey, Rostami aims to fulfill his dream of becoming a champion, drawing inspiration and strength from his family’s sacrifices and his own unwavering spirit.
His journey is a powerful reminder of the impact of determination and resilience, proving that, against all odds, one can chase their dreams and redefine their future.
