Bashir Rostami: A Wrestler with an Inspiring Journey

Meanwhile, the wrestling team is excited to welcome a new face to their roster—Bashir Rostami, a freshman who brings a unique backstory as an Afghan refugee. Bashir’s wrestling journey spans over six years in Afghanistan, and after relocating, he made waves during his high school season in Florida, finishing with an impressive record of winning over 20 matches! His ambition is to become a UFC world champion, and he draws motivation from his family’s sacrifices, especially following the loss of his father two years ago.

Bashir faced significant hurdles along his journey, including securing his residency status and taking courses to demonstrate his English proficiency. But with the support systems Newberry College has in place, focused on helping international and first-generation students succeed, he is on the right path.

New Faces Joining the Team

In addition to Bashir, North Augusta wrestler Nick Moore has signed his letter of intent to join the Newberry College wrestling team. Nick, who recently earned accolades as a senior captain and was recognized for his stellar performance in the 2024 season, emphasizes the importance of family and camaraderie at Newberry as one of the driving factors behind his decision. His achievements in wrestling, including winning the Class AAAA Upper State title, mark a significant milestone for both him and the North Augusta wrestling community.

Coach Matt Franklin is beaming with pride at the promising prospects Nick brings to the team, projecting a positive impact on future generations of wrestlers from his hometown.
