Rostami’s journey from Afghanistan to the mat showcases the resilience and spirit of the Newberry wrestling community.
Newberry, a charming little town known for its spirit and community, is buzzing with excitement as the Newberry College men’s wrestling team basks in the glow of their recent accomplishments. The team has made a solid mark in Conference Carolinas, with three wrestlers earning coveted All-Conference honors.
Leading the charge, John Parker and Andrew Reed showcased their talents by snagging spots on the First Team, while Kale Schrader proudly took his position on the Third Team. These elite honors are a testament to the hard work, dedication, and resilience of the wrestlers throughout the season.
To break it down further, Parker, who wrestles in the 197 lbs weight class, has been nothing short of spectacular this season. He topped the team with 142 points and clinched an impressive 27 victories. His impressive record includes 13 falls, 2 major decisions, 3 decision wins, and even 1 exhilarating sudden victory. Talk about a powerhouse!
Not to be outdone, Reed, competing in the 184 lbs category, also made his mark by notching up 14 wins and contributing 46 points to the team’s total. His tally showcases 2 falls, 6 major decisions, and 4 decision victories, proving that he’s a force to be reckoned with on the mat.
Meanwhile, Schrader, wrestling in the heavyweight division at 285 lbs, brought home 13 victories and a commendable 56 team points, with 6 falls, 2 major decisions, and 1 decision victory under his belt. The trio’s achievements encapsulate the relentless pursuit of excellence that drives Newberry Wrestling.
As the wrestling season approaches the playoffs, the team is gearing up for some thrilling matches in the postseason, and with their eyes set on the future, they’re also welcoming new talent into the fold. One of the brightest newcomers is Bashir Rostami, a freshman who’s made a remarkable journey to join the Newberry wrestling squad.
Rostami, originally from Afghanistan, faced incredible challenges before finding a new home in the United States. After his sister played a crucial role in helping American soldiers and their families flee Afghanistan, their family was evacuated to the U.S. Despite the hurdles, Rostami has embraced his passion for wrestling. While he wrestled for just one year in high school in Florida, he had an impressive win record of over 20 matches with only one loss. But this isn’t where his story starts. He has a rich background in wrestling, having trained for 6-7 years back in Afghanistan, as well as skills in kung fu, muay thai, mixed martial arts, and soccer.
Rostami’s aspirations include becoming a UFC world champion, and his motivation springs from memories of his late father. Although he faced disqualification in his senior year of high school, his talent was undeniable, and he was recognized as a top wrestler. After a successful campus visit where he met with the coaching team, he received an invitation to join the Newberry College wrestling program.
To ensure he was academically prepared, Rostami even took an English course at a community college before stepping foot on the Newberry campus. The college prides itself on supporting international students and first-generation college goers like him, proving that everyone deserves a chance to shine.
At Newberry, Rostami will find himself in a new weight class, the specifics of which are still to be determined, as he continues to adapt and grow. Outside of wrestling, he’s also exploring his creative passions in modeling and photography, and even aims to create a documentary detailing his unique journey.
Grounded in his faith, Rostami practices Islam and dedicates time to prayer five times each day, demonstrating the discipline that translates into his athletic pursuits. As the Newberry College wrestling team prepares for their next match at Lincoln Memorial University on November 6, 2024, the excitement among fans and teammates is palpable.
Newberry College wrestling is not just about winning trophies; it’s about community, resilience, and inspiring stories like that of Bashir Rostami. The future looks bright for this talented team as they continue to build on their success!
