Newberry, a community known for its charm and warmth, woke up to a beautiful Saturday morning on October 18, 2024. With plentiful sunshine greeting early risers, temperatures were set to reach a pleasant high of 71°F, thanks to gentle winds coming from the northeast at about 5 to 10 mph. As the day unfolded, clear skies and mild temperatures made it an ideal time for outdoor activities and gathering with friends. However, the festivities took a turn when a local party turned sour late Friday night.
Early Saturday morning, chaos erupted as police responded to a shooting incident at Many Moons Artistry located on Lindsay Street. The party, which had drawn a crowd of several hundred people, was winding down around 12:45 a.m. when the staff made the decision to shut the event down. As patrons began to exit the venue en masse, the ambiance shifted dramatically, switching from excitement to panic just moments later.
Authorities had already been present on the scene, monitoring the area to ensure a safe celebration. Just about 10 minutes after the party ended, officers reported hearing between 4 to 6 gunshots echoing from the nearby parking lot at 1400 Martin St. When the dust settled, it was confirmed that at least four individuals had sustained non-life-threatening injuries due to the nearby gunfire.
The injured victims were promptly taken to hospital by private vehicles, which provides a small silver lining in an otherwise scary situation. Thankfully, their injuries were not severe, but it certainly left an unsettling mark on the community that prides itself on safety. The Newberry Police Department, together with deputies from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Department, quickly sprang into action to connect with witnesses and gather details about the shooting.
As police Chief Kevin Goodman stated in a recent press release, “the city of Newberry continues to be one of the safest cities in this state, but like all other places, still has those few that cause discourse.” He emphasized that the police would leave no stone unturned in their quest to identify the suspects, promising that “when identified, those individuals will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent.”
In the aftermath of the party, it’s important for locals to support one another. Community outreach and communication can play a vital role in rebuilding trust and ensuring that such incidents remain isolated. The Newberry Police have encouraged anyone with any information regarding the shooting to reach out. “We need your help, folks! If you saw something, say something,” emphasized the police department. They can be contacted directly at 803-321-1010.
While the shooting took a sharp edge off an otherwise sunny weekend, the people of Newberry are known for their resilience. The forecasts indicate the sunshine will hang around, providing a lovely backdrop for a community rally in the days to come. As folks move forward, let’s keep our spirits high, stay connected, and actively participate in making our city a safer space for all.
Newberry has always been a place where people come together, support each other, and enjoy life’s simple pleasures under the warm sun. Let’s continue to focus on those lovely aspects and cherish the safety we all strive to uphold.
