The incident took place around 2:45 AM on I-26 West near mile marker 90. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently investigating the crash and its circumstances.
According to reports from the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the collision involved three vehicles. LaRhonda Gibson, aged 47, and her 23-month-old son, Ketron Gibson Jr., were driving a Nissan sedan that was stopped behind a tractor-trailer. Both vehicles had slowed down due to traffic when a Dodge Ram pickup truck struck the back of the Nissan.
The impact was severe, pushing the Nissan into the rear of the tractor-trailer. Unfortunately, both LaRhonda and Ketron were pronounced dead at the scene. The identities of the victims were confirmed by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office shortly afterward.
The driver and passenger of the pickup truck were also involved in the crash and suffered injuries. They were taken to a local hospital for treatment, although their specific conditions have not been publicly disclosed. The investigation is ongoing, and additional information may be released by authorities as it becomes available.
Following the accident, all lanes of I-26 were blocked, leading to significant traffic delays in the area. Authorities worked quickly to clear the scene and restore normal traffic flow. Motorists were advised to seek alternate routes until the situation was resolved.
The loss of LaRhonda and her young son has deeply affected the community of Newberry. Residents have expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the victims. Many are reflecting on the dangers of driving and the importance of road safety, particularly during nighttime hours when visibility can be limited.

This devastating accident serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictability of road travel and the potential consequences of vehicle collisions. As the investigation unfolds, the community remains united in support of those affected by this tragedy.
