NEWBERRY COUNTY, SC – The county of Newberry has issued a warning to its residents about a scam that is currently circulating in the area. The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the scam attempts to trick individuals into sharing their personal information through various communication methods, such as texts, emails, and mail.
Authorities report that the fraudsters claim to be representatives from Sun Pass, a company that oversees a toll road system in Florida. The scammers allegedly state that the individual owes money on a bill and that action will be taken if payment is not rendered promptly. An included link urges the potential victim to share vital financial data such as credit card information or other pertinent financial details.
Raising the stakes, the scammers are said to threaten prosecution should the supposedly owed money not be remitted. This is, according to Newberry County officials, a clear sign of fraudulent activity.
Deputies from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office are also advising anyone who has recently visited Florida and may have used a toll road, but did not pay a toll at the time, to be on the lookout. Such individuals could be targeted by the scam and should expect to receive an invoice. An important detail, however, is that this invoice would be sent directly to the registered owner of the vehicle.
The Sheriff’s Office wants residents to be aware that any threatening communications attempting to demand payment or obtain personal financial information are fraudulent. If you are contacted in such a manner, do not engage with the individual or click any links contained in the email or text message. Instead, report the incident to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office or your local law enforcement agency.
Authorities in Newberry County are actively investigating the scam and are working to track down those responsible. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity.
This incident serves as a vital reminder about the importance of internet safety and the need to protect personal information. Scams come in many forms and often try to exploit a person’s fears. Remember, always verify the source before responding to any unsolicited messages or requests for personal information.
