NEWBERRY, S.C. — It’s a quiet Thursday morning in Newberry County, but things took a tragic turn just after 2 a.m. when a 911 call brought local law enforcement to the scene of a shooting that left one person dead and another injured.
According to the authorities, the chaos began when a man called in, reporting that he had been shot during what seemed to be an attempted robbery on Green Meadows Drive, a peaceful area located just outside of Newberry city limits. Responding deputies arrived at the residence to find a male victim on the ground, suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower torso.
As deputies examined the scene, the surviving victim informed them that another individual was likely inside the house, possibly injured. Without wasting a moment, officers checked the backyard, where they found the body of a man who had tragically succumbed to his injuries. The weight of the moment hung heavy in the air.
The coroner later identified the deceased as Kier Leon Marsh, a 31-year-old man originally from Broadway, North Carolina. Although he hailed from another town, authorities confirmed that he was living at the home at the time of the incident. As for the other victim, whose injuries were serious but not life-threatening, he was swiftly taken to a nearby trauma center for urgent medical attention.
In the wake of this unsettling event, Sheriff’s officials expressed that this incident appears to be isolated, hopefully providing a sense of relief to a community that is likely feeling a bit shaken. Officers reported that a group of several men had entered the home and began shooting before making a hasty getaway in a dark-colored sedan. The motives behind the shooting remain unclear, but authorities are diligently working to piece together the puzzle.
As the investigation unfolds, local law enforcement agencies, including the Newberry Police Department and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, have joined forces to gather evidence and track down the suspects responsible for this tragic act. It’s a daunting task, but they are committed to bringing justice to the victims and their families.
With that said, law enforcement is reaching out to the community for assistance. If you have any information that could help in the investigation, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem, you’re urged to contact Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Every detail counts, and your help could make a difference!
In times like these, it’s natural for a community to rally around those affected. Local residents may be feeling anxious, but it’s important to remember that these types of incidents can happen anywhere, and the best thing we can do is support each other and keep our eyes and ears open. Communities have a powerful way of coming together during tough times, and now is a moment for neighbors to check in on one another.
As investigators continue to search for suspects, we encourage everyone to remain vigilant. If you notice anything suspicious or are aware of unusual activity in your area, please report it. Staying connected and looking out for one another can help ensure that Newberry remains a safe and welcoming place for all.
This is a developing story, and updates will follow as more information becomes available. Let’s continue to keep the victims and their families in our thoughts as law enforcement works diligently to resolve this situation.
