Newberry County Flourishes with Samsung’s Economic Impact and Job Creation

Newberry County Thrives Thanks to Samsung’s Presence

Welcome to Newberry County, South Carolina, a place that’s been buzzing with activity ever since Samsung Electronics Home Appliances America (SEHA) decided to set up shop here in 2017. It’s hard to believe that just a few years ago, this area wasn’t as vibrant as it is now. But with the establishment of a state-of-the-art home appliance factory, everything changed!

Transforming the Local Economy

When Samsung announced its plans, the excitement in the community was palpable. The factory has since become a real powerhouse for the local economy, injecting nearly $500 million into the region and creating over 1,500 jobs for the residents. That’s a whole lot of growth for a small town!

Bobby Stevens, the Production Manager at SEHA, shared his observations on how this development has transformed Newberry: “When SEHA came we saw hotels being built and new restaurants. The community has just exploded.” It’s not just the jobs; it’s the spirit of growth that’s thriving here. Everywhere you look, new housing developments and eateries are springing up. The area is truly blooming!

A Closer Connection with Local Businesses

Local businesses are feeling the positive vibes as well! The popular restaurant Figaro the Dining Room, located downtown, has seen benefit from Samsung’s presence. Executive Chef John Worthington noted how meaningful these connections have become, saying, “For a town to get better, you have to have people,” referring to the influx of good-paying jobs.

Figaro has not only provided catering for Samsung’s events, but employees also frequent the restaurant. Worthington adds, “We need those plant jobs to help push things along. Not everything can be done by small business.” He emphasizes the importance of large corporations in enhancing the local economy. “We have to add to their lifestyle,” he remarked, showing a strong sense of community pride.

Spark for Further Business Development

After Samsung’s arrival, another Korean-based company, KRA Operations, also set up in the area. They provide crucial stamping and injection molding parts for SEHA. CEO William Chang expressed his surprise at how welcoming the Newberry community has been to the KRA team. “The Newberry community has been very welcoming and accepting of Korean culture, and the KRA Koreans are happy to be here in South Carolina,” he said.

Enhanced Efficiency and Partnerships

KRA’s proximity to Samsung has made managing operations much smoother. Gone are the days of long waits for parts shipped from overseas. Stevens pointed out the huge difference this has made, stating, “Now we have local material, so in just a few hours or even 10 minutes, we can get parts and the materials we need.” This efficiency is crucial in maintaining smooth production.

Moreover, these two companies have developed a strong partnership. They often support one another; when one needs extra hands, the other steps in. “We are each other’s right hand,” Stevens said, highlighting their collaborative spirit—especially important during these challenging times.

A Community Impact that Lasts

Amid inflation and rising prices, both KRA and Samsung are pivotal in providing job security for locals. “I really think there would be a bit of a struggle especially with inflation… people need jobs and we’re able to do that because of Samsung,” said KRA Purchasing Specialist Mersade Studebaker. It’s clear: Samsung and KRA are more than just companies; they have become integral parts of the Newberry community.

In summary, Newberry County is alive with opportunity and growth, all thanks to the arrival of Samsung and its partners. Whether it’s job creation, community enhancement, or local business support, the “Samsung effect” is a bright beacon of hope for people in this thriving area.
