NEWBERRY — The excitement was palpable last week as the Newberry High School varsity girls’ basketball team launched their 2024-25 season with an impressive home opener on December 6th against the Union County Yellow Jackets. After an intense battle on the court, the lady Bulldogs emerged victorious, finishing the game at 42-29.
As the whistle blew to start the game, both teams found themselves struggling to find their rhythm. The first quarter was a quiet one, with a surprising combined total of just 14 points. It was a real nail-biter as the two teams fought tooth and nail, each trying to establish dominance but managing to tie the score at 7-7 by the end of the quarter.
Moving into the second quarter, the action heated up a bit, although not quite enough to set the crowd on fire. The lady Yellow Jackets edged out Newberry, outscoring them 10-4 in this period, allowing them to head into halftime with a slim lead of 17-11.
But the real excitement unfolded in the second half! Junior guard Daizee Williams took it upon herself to turn things around. She came out swinging, scoring a whopping 16 points in the second half alone, which was more than enough to help the team reclaim their footing. In the third quarter, she lit up the scoreboard with nine points, pushing her team to a 29-21 lead by the period’s end.
With the lady Bulldogs now on a roll, they tightened their grip on the game. Newberry showcased their defensive prowess in the final quarter, allowing the Yellow Jackets to score only eight points as they cruised towards victory. From the moment Newberry took a 22-20 lead in the third, they never looked back, maintaining control to secure their second win of the season.
While Williams was undoubtedly the star of the show with her game-high of 22 points, she wasn’t the only player contributing to the team effort. Tamaria Wadsworth also made her mark, scoring all eight points in the second half to help seal the deal for the Bulldogs.
Looking ahead, the lady Bulldogs are preparing for a busy week. They will hit the road on December 10th to take on Chapin before returning to their home court the very next day to host Irmo. And don’t miss the highly anticipated part one of their rivalry showdown against Mid-Carolina on December 13th.
The season is just getting started, and with such a solid performance against Union County, fans have every reason to be excited. Go Bulldogs!
