Newberry, the heart of high school football in the area, has officially wrapped up the 2024 season, and what an exciting season it has been! As the teams hang up their jerseys and fans eagerly await the next season, there’s still plenty of reason to celebrate the incredible accomplishments of our local players.
Let’s kick things off with the Player of the Year award, which goes to the standout player from Newberry County. This year, the honor goes to Kenton Caldwell, a junior from Newberry. As a dual-threat quarterback and defensive back, Kenton racked up impressive statistics, throwing for 1,575 passing yards and rushing for 382 yards. He found the end zone a total of 21 times, with 12 of those coming through the air and 9 on the ground. His contributions on both sides of the ball were pivotal for his team’s success.
Moving on to the Offensive Player(s) of the Year, we have a duo that really lit up the field. First up is AD Basnight, a senior running back and defensive back from Mid-Carolina. He had a remarkable season with 14 carries for 83 rushing yards and 18 receptions totaling 405 receiving yards, finding the end zone 12 times (8 catches and 4 runs).
We also want to highlight BJ Jones, a junior from Newberry High, who had an equally impressive season. He rushed for 497 yards on 78 attempts, caught 20 passes for 149 yards, and found the end zone a staggering 16 times—14 rushing and 2 receiving. Both players added serious firepower to their teams’ attacks!
The award for Defensive Player of the Year goes to Jamarian Dewalt, a senior from Mid-Carolina. Jamarian’s defensive prowess was evident as he made 83 total tackles, including 46 solo tackles, two sacks, and nine tackles for a loss. He also showcased his playmaking abilities with four interceptions, a defensive touchdown, and a forced fumble. His presence on the field made a big difference for his teammates.
Recognizing talent is essential, and our Newcomer(s) of the Year spotlight shines on three remarkable athletes: Ryker Woolstenhulme from Mid-Carolina, Cash Brown from Newberry, and Sam Moore from Whitmire. Ryker, a sophomore linebacker/running back, notched 61 total tackles and rushed for 465 yards with four touchdowns to his name. Cash, a junior wide receiver, caught 21 passes for 395 yards and five touchdowns. Sam, a sophomore lineman, impressed with 47 tackles, four sacks, and three forced fumbles, proving he can play both sides of the ball effectively.
Now let’s recognize the unsung heroes of the game! The Special Teams Player of the Year goes to Daniel Teran, a senior kicker from Newberry. Daniel’s consistency was on display as he made 29 of 30 extra points and hit all four of his field goal attempts, the longest being a commendable 38 yards.
On the return side of things, Returner of the Year honors go to CJ Earl, a senior defensive back and versatile player for Newberry. His ability to change the game with his returns surely kept opponents on their toes!
Lastly, we want to toast to the Iron Man of the Year, Bryce Satterwhite, a senior who truly embodies leadership on the field. As a punter, quarterback, and tight end, his versatility shined brightly with 457 passing yards, 116 rushing yards, and seven total touchdowns. His hard work and team-first attitude are what every player should aspire to!
As we turn the page on the 2024 season and look ahead to the next one, we can take a moment to celebrate these outstanding athletes for their hard work, hustle, and dedication to the game. Congratulations to all the award recipients; you’ve made Newberry proud!
