NEWBERRY, SC – Excitement filled the air at Willie L. Scott Gymnasium on Thursday evening as the Newberry High School varsity girls’ basketball team clinched a tightly contested victory over Marlboro County with a score of 51-45. This victory not only showcased the team’s resilience but also marked a significant milestone as Newberry advanced to the quarterfinals of the 3A state playoffs for the first time since the 2017-18 season.
The game kicked off with a fierce energy, as Marlboro County took an early lead of 15-12 after the first quarter. The tension was palpable, and both teams fought hard to seize control. But Newberry wasn’t about to let the game slip away that easily!
During the second quarter, the momentum began to shift. Newberry rallied together and executed a stunning 12-6 run, changing the rhythm of the game after Marlboro County’s freshman standout, Serenity Bethea, ran into foul trouble. With this turn of events, the score was tied at 24-24 by halftime, setting the stage for a nail-biting second half!
Stepping into the spotlight was Jasmin Robinson, a junior forward who delivered an impressive performance with 17 points, nine of which came when the team needed it most during the second half. On top of her scoring, she also dominated the boards, grabbing nine total rebounds, including four offensive rebounds, showcasing her tenacity and skill. Her efforts certainly played a pivotal role in helping Newberry take the lead going into the final quarter.
As the fourth quarter rolled around, Newberry had turned the tide and led by 40-36. The crowd was on the edge of their seats when Newberry launched a quick 7-2 run, expanding their lead to 47-38. With every point scored, the home crowd erupted in cheers, fueling the players’ determination to hold onto their lead.
Marlboro County made a valiant attempt to stage a comeback, registering a 7-3 run, but they faced a formidable defense from Newberry in the final moments of the game. The tension climbed as Marlboro County struggled to find the basket in the last minute, ultimately falling short.
Newberry’s victory was a team effort, with Daizee Williams contributing 13 points and four steals, proving she could be a game-changer on both ends of the floor. Not to be overlooked, Tamaria Wadsworth added nine points to the scoreboard, underscoring the strength of the entire roster.
