Newberry Honors Al Harvey’s Legacy While Embracing Holiday Cheer and Economic Growth

Newberry Remembers Al Harvey and Celebrates the Holiday Season

The charming city of Newberry has recently faced the bittersweet moment of mourning the loss of one of its beloved figures, Al Harvey. Al served as the city manager for an impressive twenty-one years, starting in 1979 and going strong until 2000. His dedication to the community was so impactful that the City Council decided they simply could not do without him, and they invited him to come out of retirement in 2013. He graciously accepted and continued to lead Newberry for another three years, making significant contributions that are still visible today.

Al was not just the city manager; he was a kind gentleman whose love for Newberry was evident in everything he did. From the revitalization of parks to community programs, a simple ride through Newberry will showcase many of the projects he dedicated his time and heart to. As we reflect on his legacy, we extend our heartfelt condolences and appreciation to his family and all who knew him.

Exciting Christmas Festivities

As we transition into the bustling holiday season, Newberry’s downtown area has transformed into a festive wonderland. The recent Main Street Lights event drew over 5,000 attendees for the annual tree lighting ceremony. It was a delight to see the community come together in such a joyous spirit. A special shoutout goes to the Devette family of Laila’s Place for so graciously selecting the beautiful tree that stands proudly this year, and to our city staff for their talented decorating skills that transformed downtown into a twinkling holiday haven.

New Businesses Brighten Up Newberry

Newberry’s economic scene is buzzing with energy as several new businesses have recently opened their doors. The Founders Federal Credit Union has established a branch at 1729 Main Street, complementing their location at Newberry College. The Storage Depot is now providing climate-controlled self-storage options at 1326 College Street, making it their third location.

Looking for a unique stay? The Gilded Bat, a lovely bed and breakfast at 808 Boundary Street, embraces a stunning Victorian-Gothic theme that is sure to enchant visitors. Recently, Allure Health & Beauty celebrated their grand opening at 1321 Hunt Street, offering a full-service med spa and salon to the community.

Don’t forget to check out Stage 2, located at 1335 Wilson Road, specializing in furniture and home décor. And there’s even more to look forward to! The Barn Nutrition Bar and Hangout is on track to open soon at the Shops at Heritage, featuring healthcare shakes and treats. By December, we can expect delightful additions like the Cook Out, the UPS Store, and Legends restaurant in the Food Lion shopping center. There’s also buzz surrounding the opening of the new Home 2 Suites, taking reservations for February.

Strong Economy and Community Support

Statistics from the US Census Bureau indicate that Newberry County holds a commendable position, boasting the thirteenth highest median household income out of 46 counties in South Carolina. The rise in average incomes can be linked to the growing manufacturing sector, which employs over 25% of our workforce—far above the state (12%) and national (8%) averages.

Local Law Enforcement & Senior Services

On a heartfelt note, we are incredibly proud of our local law enforcement agencies. According to the latest report from the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), Newberry County boasted the highest clearance rate for ten types of crimes. These impressive numbers highlight the tireless efforts and unwavering commitment of our dedicated public servants.

Moreover, the Central Midlands Area on Aging is stepping up to offer essential services for those aged 60 and over, including reimbursements for dental services and medication as part of the American Rescue Plan. They will be on-hand at O’Neal Street United Methodist Church on December 14th for inquiries, so mark your calendars if you have questions.

Looking Ahead

As the festive season unfolds, snow is predicted every Friday night in downtown Newberry, creating a magical atmosphere for residents and visitors alike. The Newberry Opera House has planned exciting performances, and various churches and community organizations are rolling out special programs to celebrate the season.

As your re-elected mayor, I am thrilled about the bright future ahead for our lovely city. Together, we will continue to build a community we can all be proud of. Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas season filled with joy, love, and the warmth of community. Merry Christmas!
