Newberry’s Housing Boom: A Bright Future for Residents

Nobody can deny that Newberry, South Carolina, is on the rise! The city is bustling with activity as a growing population, especially students from Newberry College, is pushing for more housing options. The local government is stepping up its game to seize this opportunity for revitalization and economic growth.

Exciting Developments on the Horizon

According to Wayne Redfern, the Director of Planning and Development, Newberry aims to add around 400 new homes over the next four years. “We hope it will be a great boom for the economy and will bring stores and more,” Redfern shared enthusiastically. It’s really an exciting time for the city, and residents are buzzing with anticipation of what’s to come.

One of the most talked-about projects is the renovation of a 2.5-acre site at the corner of First and College Street. This site has been sitting idle for quite some time, but plans are now underway to transform it into a vibrant community hub featuring 24 townhome-style units. And get this—an old antique store located on the site is set to be preserved and potentially turned into a cozy food service venue. Sounds like a win-win!

Addressing the Housing Crunch

The intent behind these housing developments is clear: to provide affordable options for college students and young professionals. Redfern mentioned that they’re not just looking to expand the housing market but aim to create starter homes that are budget-friendly. This is a wonderful opportunity for those struggling to find safe and affordable places to call home.

But wait, there’s more! Another project is in the works on Radio Road, where developers plan to construct nine duplexes. While some of these homes will likely be sold, there will be plenty available for rent, which is fantastic news for people in the area. Newberry College is also joining the effort by developing six additional townhome-style units on its property.

A Personal Perspective

Local residents are certainly feeling the excitement—just ask Cheryl Harrington, a longtime Newberry resident who lives right near the proposed Radio Road development. “I looked here about six years ago and I had a terrible time finding something within my price range,” Harrington said, reflecting on her own housing woes. “I’m sure that there’s a lot of kids and adults that need housing.” Her sentiments resonate with many who have struggled for years to find affordable shelter in the growing college town.

A Thriving College Community

Newberry College recently celebrated its largest enrollment period, alongside its biggest graduating class this past fall. To accommodate all these bright young minds, the college is constructing a new residence hall that will feature 104 beds. This hall is expected to open by next fall, just in time for the new academic year. The goal is to have all three developments completed by the end of July, so students have a cozy place to return to.

Looking Ahead

In summary, Newberry is dynamically evolving, and the community is on the verge of a substantial housing revolution. With various developments planned and a strong focus on affordability, everyone seems to agree that the future looks bright for residents and incoming students alike. If you’re a part of this community or soon to be, there’s plenty to be excited about.
