Newberry Comes Together to Remember a Local Star
NEWBERRY, SC – The small town of Newberry is rallying together to celebrate the life of Kalundra Nasasha Wise, affectionately known as “Kay Kay.” Her untimely passing on June 9, 2024, has left a palpable void in the hearts of her family, friends, and the entire community.
A Life Full of Achievements
Born in Newberry to Kelvin and Amy Jeter Wise, Kalundra was raised in a loving household that encouraged and supported her every endeavor. A proud graduate of Newberry High School, Kalundra excelled both in academics and athletics. She was a force to be reckoned with on the softball and basketball courts. Her talent was recognized through multiple accolades, including becoming a four-time All-Region, All-State, and MVP. Notably, she earned the title of the highest batting average not just once, but twice!
Following her successful high school athletic career, Kalundra took her talents to Charleston Southern University, where she played softball on a full athletic scholarship. It was here that her fierce competitive spirit shone even more brightly.
Impact on the Community
After her college days, Kalundra found her way into the workforce at Michelin Tire Company, where she dedicated ten years of service. She later joined Hibbett Sports. Known for her sunny disposition, Kalundra had a knack for making friends wherever she went. “She never met a stranger,” is a sentiment echoed by many who crossed her path.
In her off time, Kalundra was a big fan of sports, passionately supporting her favorite teams—the North Carolina Tarheels, Dallas Cowboys, and the USC Lady Gamecocks. She also had a flair for the arts, enjoying photography and traveling, always eager to capture moments with family and friends.
A Faithful Heart
Kalundra’s commitment to her faith was evident from an early age as she joined Welch Zion Baptist Church. It was clear that her love for the Lord, family, and friends was ingrained in her very being, shaping the compassionate soul she shared with the world.
Her Legacy Continues

Her three brothers—Montedric “Tee” Smoot, Myron Smoot, and Calvin “Budda” Smoot—along with her devoted long-term partner, Tiffany Jones, and their children, Ai’Leah and Di’Chad, stand with a large family filled with aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, all mourning the loss of such a vibrant and loving presence.
