Newberry Man Sentenced to 40 Years for Human Trafficking Conspiracy and Violence Against Victims

Columbia, S.C. – A Harrowing Case of Human Trafficking

In a deeply troubling case that has shocked the community, a man from Newberry has been sentenced to a staggering 40 years in prison for his involvement in human trafficking. Eric Jones, a 31-year-old, was found guilty of various charges including human trafficking conspiracy, being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as witness tampering. This sentencing, which occurred on a Thursday in federal court, sheds light on an alarming chapter that stretched from 2018 to 2022.

The Dark Reality of Human Trafficking

Eric Jones was not working alone; he collaborated with another individual to exploit women through the commercial sex trade. Evidence presented in court revealed that they engaged in this horrific arrangement using violent force, fraud, and coercion. Over the course of several years, Jones systematically directed physical assaults against the women involved, even going so far as to record some of these brutal acts.

According to investigators, Jones used extreme violence to maintain control over his victims. He assaulted them with firearms and blunt objects, leaving many with severe injuries that required hospitalization, multiple surgeries, and resulted in permanent scars and broken bones. Victims lived in constant fear of Jones and shared harrowing tales of feeling trapped in a hopeless situation, fearing for their lives and wellbeing.

Coercion Techniques and Manipulation

Sadly, this case highlights the manipulative and depraved tactics employed by traffickers. Testimonies disclosed that Jones didn’t just rely on physical violence; he also introduced drugs to some victims and exploited their addictions. Fentanyl, a powerful opioid, was among the drugs used to manipulate his victims further, worsening their dependency. By doing this, he coerced these individuals into commercial sex under the threat of violence if they did not comply. The psychological control he exerted was almost as devastating as the physical abuse.

Investigators found that 19 women were directly connected to the conspiracy led by Jones, many of whom were recognized as victims. They described terrifying experiences and an overwhelming sense of powerlessness, emphasizing that they believed there was no escape from Jones’ grip.

Obstruction of Justice

As if this case couldn’t get any more unsettling, Jones was also accused of attempting to thwart the investigation itself. He allegedly intimidated victims, instructing them not to speak with law enforcement agents, and even threatened their families. This tactic of witness tampering is common among traffickers who want to maintain a level of control, instilling fear and isolation in their victims.

The Consequences

The severity of Jones’ crimes resulted in a lengthy sentence. U.S. District Judge emphasized the gravity of these offenses, imposing a 40-year prison term followed by a lifetime of court-ordered supervision. Jones is also barred from any contact with the victims and is required to pay a total of $65,000 in restitution to eight of them.

Adding to this tragic saga, Jones’ co-defendant, Brittany Cromer, had previously pleaded guilty to charges of human trafficking conspiracy and received a significantly lighter sentence of five years earlier this month.

A Community Response

This heartbreaking case serves as a grim reminder of the pervasive issues surrounding human trafficking that continue to plague communities across the country. As law enforcement and local organizations work tirelessly to combat these injustices, it is crucial for communities to remain vigilant and supportive of efforts aimed at aiding victims and bringing perpetrators to justice.

The echoes of this case will be felt throughout Columbia and beyond, as residents grapple with the understanding that such evil can exist in their midst. It reinforces the importance of awareness and action, as we all have a role to play in protecting the vulnerable and standing against such heinous acts.
