Community support has been a vital part of their journey.
The small but spirited town of Newberry is buzzing with excitement as the local middle school basketball teams wrap up their season in a way that could be described as nothing short of spectacular! Both the boys’ and girls’ teams have made their mark on the court, with achievements that have the whole community cheering. It’s a great time to be a Newberry Tiger!
Let’s dive right into the boys’ basketball team, which recently clinched the coveted Lexington 10 South championship. This thrilling victory took place on February 8th, 2024, as they battled fiercely against Mid-Carolina Middle School, securing a solid 45-35 win. Their performance can only be described as a fine display of teamwork and determination!
But the thrilling action didn’t end there! This victory propelled the boys’ team into the championship game on February 10th, where they faced off against the Lexington 10 North champions, Lakeside Middle School. The Newberry boys showed their strength yet again, defeating Lakeside with a final score of 42-32. What a way to end the season! With a stunning overall record of 16-1 and an undefeated record in conference play, these young athletes have showcased their talent, discipline, and hard work.
Now, moving on to the girls’ basketball team! This year’s season was a noteworthy one, especially after they captured the Lexington 10 South conference championship. Their success came on the same day as the boys’ championship, February 8th, when they triumphed over Batesburg-Leesville Middle School with a score of 27-16. This historic win marked the first Lex-10 South title for the girls’ team since the 2013-14 season and has reignited the community’s pride in its athletes.
The girls’ team also advanced to the title game on February 10th but faced a tough Beachwood Middle School and ultimately finished as runners-up. Although the final score wasn’t in their favor, their overall record of 13-4, along with their undefeated conference play, speaks volumes about their impressive season. It’s been a riveting journey for these young athletes!
A big shoutout has to go to Head Coach Shannon Reid, who has been steering the girls’ program since 2021. With a solid background of 16 years coaching at the college level—including a notable stint at Erskine College—she has played a crucial role in revamping the team’s dynamics. Reid understands the importance of setting a strong foundation and values effective communication, especially when transitioning from college coaching to middle school. Her expertise has helped nurture these talented players into skilled competitors.
In fact, Coach Reid is not only an experienced coach but also a Hall of Fame inductee at her own high school and Pfeiffer University. During her college career, she was a two-time Most Valuable Player and scored over 1,000 career points, leading her team to its first NCAA tournament appearance. With her at the helm, there’s much optimism that the current crop of middle school girls could very well bring home a state title for Newberry for the first time since 2018.
The enthusiasm doesn’t stop with the players and coaches. The Newberry community is rallying around their teams, encouraging everyone to congratulate both the boys’ and girls’ teams on their remarkable accomplishments. Their efforts not only reflect hard work and dedication but also invoke a spirit of unity and pride amongst the townsfolk.
So whether you’re a proud parent, a devoted fan, or just a community member cheering from the sidelines, it’s an exciting time to support the Newberry Tigers! Let’s keep the spirit alive and celebrate these outstanding young athletes who are sure to inspire the next generation!
