Newberry is buzzing with excitement as the Newberry Middle School basketball teams have made quite an impact this season. Their hard work, determination, and teamwork led them to impressive victories, creating a season to remember for both the boys and girls teams.
In a thrilling showdown on February 8, the boys’ basketball team secured their spot in the Lexington 10 South championship by defeating Mid-Carolina Middle School with a score of 45-35. It was an exhilarating match, showcasing the boys’ resilience as they moved on to the championship game held on February 10. In a nail-biting game, the boys clinched the championship title by triumphing over Lakeside Middle School, finishing with a solid 42-32 victory.
With this remarkable achievement, the boys wrapped up their season with an impressive overall record of 16-1 and a flawless record in conference play. They’ve proven to be a dominating force on the court, earning the title of champions and the respect of their peers and fans alike.
Meanwhile, the girls’ team also made strides this season, demonstrating immense talent and grit. They beat Batesburg-Leesville Middle School 27-16 on February 8, advancing to the championship game. Though they fought hard, they ultimately fell short against Beachwood Middle School in the title game, finishing as the runners-up. Despite the loss, the girls wrapped up their season with a commendable overall record of 13-4 and, just like the boys, they also went undefeated in their conference.
This marks the girls’ first Lex-10 South title since the 2013-14 season, making it a significant milestone for the program.
Shannon Reid, head coach of the girls’ team, took the reins of the program in 2021 and has revitalized the squad, leading them to success once again. With 16 years of head coaching experience at the college level, including her time at Erskine College, Reid brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her players. She has been instrumental in fostering a strong foundation for the team and has emphasized the crucial differences between coaching high school-level athletes and collegiate players.
Reid, a former two-time Most Valuable Player and CVAC Conference Player of the Year at Pfeiffer University, focuses on guiding her players toward their individual goals and aspirations, as well as aiming for a collective dream of bringing home a state title for Newberry for the first time since 2018.
As the dust settles on this remarkable basketball season, congratulations are in order for both the boys’ and girls’ teams. The entire Newberry community has rallied around the players, celebrating their efforts, achievements, and sportsmanship. There’s a palpable excitement in the air, and with a rallying call of “Go Tigers!”, everyone is looking forward to what the future holds for these talented young athletes.
With the foundation laid this season, it’s clear that Newberry Middle School basketball is on the rise. All eyes will be on the Tigers in the years to come as they continue their journey toward even greater heights in the world of basketball.
