Greetings from Newberry! If you’ve picked up the Observer or noticed the buzz around town, you might’ve seen some changes lately. Let’s dive into what to expect from the Observer as we head into 2024.
One of the significant changes made recently is the discontinuation of the jail log. Since August, the decision was made to put a stop to this practice. Why? Well, it turns out there’s a belief that everyone is innocent until proven guilty. By publishing names, ages, and charges, it inadvertently casts a shadow of guilt on individuals who may not have committed any crime at all. Instead of the jail log, readers can look forward to court reports, which will officially outline sentences and charges. The court reports are expected to roll out next week, offering a detailed perspective on the legal happenings in our community. For those eager to learn about alleged crimes, the Newberry County Government website has an inmate search feature available for your convenience.
Now, let’s talk about staffing. The Observer is currently experiencing a shortage of staff. This means that the folks behind the scenes are juggling multiple roles. The task of reporting, writing, and editing falls on a few shoulders, leaving less time for managing ad sales or subscriptions. While the dedicated team works hard behind the scenes, it means that there may be some delays in response time when you reach out for assistance.
A friendly reminder: if you find yourself needing help, don’t hesitate to call the office. However, it’s worth mentioning that rudeness is not tolerated. Understanding that frustration can be high is essential, but everyone deserves respect. If a caller is dismissive or unpleasant, you might find that the call ends rather quickly—after all, we’re all trying to keep things pleasant!
We’ve also been hearing various questions regarding paper deliveries. If you haven’t received the Observer in your mailbox, you’re not alone. There has been some confusion about where the paper is printed and how it gets to you. Here’s the scoop: the Observer is printed in North Carolina, and after printing, it’s transported back to Newberry on Tuesday nights. From there, it’s distributed to the Newberry Post Office, which is responsible for getting it to you.
In case your paper hasn’t arrived on Wednesday, bear with us and give it a day or two. Sometimes, deliveries can be delayed for various reasons. If by chance your paper is still MIA a few days after, feel free to stop by the office. The team is working hard to ensure you stay informed and call it our mission to ensure that every reader has access to the news they rely on. Your patience is very much appreciated!
As we move forward into 2024, changes are on the horizon to improve your experience with the Observer. The team is grateful for your understanding and support during these transitional months. With your continued patience and respect, we’re hopeful for a fresh start, and we can’t wait to serve you better!
If you have questions or concerns, feel free to drop by our office at 1216 Main Street, Newberry, SC 29108, or give us a call at T: 803-276-0625. We’re here to help and are excited for what’s to come!
